Black electrical tape on "Original" AR-6 tweeters?

Picked up an inexpensive pair of AR-6's that look beautiful.

Managed to get the grills off (glued). Looked "original".

woofer surrounds gone of course but found black electricians tape on the wires leading to the tweeter on the front of the baffle.

Would AR have done this (anybody else seen it?) or are these not original and someone has played with them?

Looking forward to listening to them.

Gave a pair of AR-4x's to my brother, he's rehabbed them and very happy!

The black tape is completely original and normal. Tweeters in the early version AR-6s, as with many other early AR models, were externally "hard" wired to a tweeter terminal strip, and the black tape was simply a way to keep the wires close to the front baffle. Since the grills were glued on (as you discovered), AR never intended for them to win a beauty contest with its external wiring. Later version were back wired, and there was no tape on the front by this time. By this time the grills were also attached by Velcro fasteners. The early versions are usually more desirable.

Glad to hear that they're probably original.

While I'm interested in keeping them when I've replaced the surrounds, would I be considered pond scum if I re-attached the grills with velcro?

Now that I've got the grill off, it's not going to be "original" glue if I glue them and I don't relish having to pop off the grills again (especially if I use too strong of a glue!).

I feel better now and know I made the right decision on picking them up.

Thanks for your confirmation!

Nah. Even AR eventually went to velcro on previously glued models.

Besides, nobody here will ever tell.
