Can anyone tell me if the grills for the woofer covers were identical in the AR9 and the AR90? I'm still looking for a set of AR 9 grills if anyone has a lead. Thanks.

Thanks.

I measured my AR9 and AR90 woofer covers and they measure differently. I did not try exchanging them. I am also looking for a AR9 woofer cover and am deceiding weather or not to have a couple made. I have the grillcloth for the speakers and the pins but not the frames. If I choose to make the frames, would you be interested? Dale

If you can make frames that are exact replicas of the AR9 Grilles at a reasonable cost, sure I'd be interested! Let me know.

Well, as exact as can be done. The AR9's had a gold colored band around the inside of the grill against the speaker cabinet. This touch was not used with the AR90's. I am thinking about having 20 frames made exact to the 9's including the pins. The fabric I have is very very close to original and will not be noticed as replacement. I am considering NOT doing the gold ring as I don't think it looks that sharp but you could add it later if you wish as the extrusions are available. Cost wise, I will check and let you know. My guess is $45-$55.00 a pair with fabric. Dale

The original frames were black plastic. My guess is that some sort of composite wood would be the best substitute in the absence of an original frame. The composite should be less likely to have a harmonic resonance. Perhaps someone thats done this, or is actively involved in speaker design can give a better answer.

On my AR9's, both sets have wood frames. The wood looks like a type of pressboard and is very heavy. On 3 sets of AR90's the frames are black plastic.

On later AR9's, the original frames were made of black plastic. On earlier AR9's, the original frames were made of composite wood which was painted black

The plastic frames had keyed mounting pins to ensure that they were mounted correctly. The earlier composite wood frames had four identical mounting pins (male in the frame, female on the speaker enclosure)

If you wish, I will be happy to provide photos and a drawing of the original composite wood frame from my own early AR9's

This is more complicated than I imagined. I assumed the frames were all plastic like my 92's. Are the mounting pins different between the plastic and wood? Barrydor, it would be great if you could provide pictures. If only the idiot I bought them from on Ebay had sent the grills as he said he would...........x(

It would probably be much simpler to make the replacements

from MDF or composite board like the earlier originals

Don't know, but a friend of mine has AR9's with the later plastic

grilles - I can probably find out this coming weekend. Also, there

is someone who occasionally sells sets of replacement pins on eBay

Give me an e-mail address & I will send you the info

Larry (Vintage-AR) sells the pins and fabric sometimes on eBay but if you contact him directy Larry will usually work directly with you. Find one of his auctions and contact him. He is great to deal with and knows a lot about the AR line. Dale
