Assuming speakers are original except for woofers, your biggest question is, do both mids operate correctly?

If the mids work, the next issue is restoring the tweeters to original performance.  The tweeters in the photo are shot, whether or not they make a noise.

Lastly, replace the pots and caps.

Do the above and you will hear AR3as

The woofers, if they work, are a relatively minor flaw.

Who would you send the tweeters to get rebuilt

Yes.  They could also be re-coned original ARs. The only way to know is remove them and look at the back side of the woofer..  They are not original 3a woofers.

If the price were right they would be OK as a starting point if you want a Classic AR.

Not really concerned about value if they sound ok would it be ok to leave them   My problem is I have no idea what a nice pair sounds like so have no reference

No. They do not look original. They could be original AR and could be OK but they don’t look a like 3a woofer.

Could they be the woofers from Japan that were used often by factory replacements I think tonegan is the brand

  4. I also used two crossbraces 1” by like an 1/8 between the woofers and and between the mid and woofer to keep the wood from bowing in when you stretch the fabric.I bought the fabric from simplyspeakers and stapled .i wouldnt use hardwood as to hard to staple

Nice job on the grilles!  I have been thinking about making a set out of wood (spruce or basswood) and fabric.  i would like to retain the original mounts but that isn't strictly required.

Could you provide a bit more detail on what you did to refinish them?

    Thanks!

    Tim

I sanded with 220 than 100 watch the edges as easy to go through veneer. I use watco danish oil stain on all my refinishes. This is light walnut

I have not yet done anything with the crossovers.  I don't have a reason to think they need work, beyond their age.

On a related note (ha ha), I am in the middle of a bi-amp experiment, which I will describe in the 'bi-amping the big ADS' thread, probably later this week.

I've also come up with an OK solution for the grilles, which I can also describe separately.

    Good luck with your repairs!

    Tim

I made these grills, cost me 15 for the fabric, used 3/4” wood frame and velcro

  8. Have a nice pair of ads l1290 sound good to me but sent pictures of tweets and mids to richard so, he said they look swollen from overheating. $100 a pair for tweets,150 for mids. Anyone have any advice for me if I should spend the $
