Had a pair of 33s a very long time ago and liked them, so let me offer encouragement to complete your project. Whether or not they were truly aperiodic, it seemed like they were KLH's market response to the highly successful Dynaco A25.

I wonder which version of the generally disappointing W70 your dad bought to replace the ARs. Seems to me the W70 was updated a few times with newer & possibly, improved, tweeters that may have made them more competitive with AR & KLH, etc.

With multiple pairs of vintage & more recent loudspeakers to choose from, I find myself using old ARs, KLHs & Dynacos more often than not. The one exception to this is a pair of old Quad ESL63s that sound better than anything else, in this house, anyway.

If you're located anywhere near Los Angeles, you can pick up a really nice, orphan AR2 from me to match your AR2 at a very reasonable price.

Given the similarities to the A-25 and A-35 as well as the Scan family ties, you can market it as a close relative to the A-25 and you can price it similarly. You won't have a problem selling them as their Dynaco cousins are still in high demand.

There must be a lot of AR orphans out there from old, mono systems. Perhaps we should compile a listing here somewhere so those of us in a particular geographical area can swap what we have.

Yes, that is probably correct: Notice the relatively wide woofer surround as well as the protective tweeter screen that resembles the screen used on the early, Scan-based Dynaco A25s.

Anglo-American cousins to your system: A Quad 405 (along with Quad 33) now powers my AR 3as and sounds better than anything else I have tried, lending credence to your Anglo-American idea.

It's probably a Europe-only Scan model. This was NOT sold in the US. It looks somewhat similar in size to A35 or A40XL, but that similarity is in size only.

Glenn, Unfortunately, I'm in Los Angeles. I think shipping these is too risky. (That's based on several horrific past experiences.) You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good, local pair--fifty years ago it seemed like everyone in Westchester had 3as.

Are you sure your tweeters are properly connected via the rear terminals in your "bad" AR2? The photo is not clear enough to be visible on this computer.

Hideous indeed, but nevertheless, original and worth preserving. I have searched high & low for this cloth and have never found any that was available new. There were several makers of cheap speakers which used similar and possibly, the exact material, in their products. Rectilinear used several different cloth varieties that were very similar. OTOH, if you're going to the trouble to replace the hideous original vinyl, why not use linen?

Don't seal them as they were never intended to be sealed. There is a closed cup full of fiberglass behind them.

I have owned & used multiple pairs of both the 6 & 23 and found little if any difference. Both are very worthwhile.

These were produced after the glory days were over and Dynaco was already on life-support. That's why you can't find any info on them. Nevertheless, you needn't be overly concerned about amplifier compatibility. To simplify in the extreme, a decent low- or mid-priced amp of 40 or 50 watts per channel should suffice.

Three tweeters, three crossovers and one woofer from two different pairs of EPI 100. See photos for specific model details.
All three tweeters work fine. Cosmetically they are fair. All three crossovers seem ok. Woofer surround has hardened, is stiff and needs the surround replaced; it otherwise seems ok. $100 for all.
If picked up locally, buyer can have the very nice (& heavy) cabinet for free.

They are OK, but nothing to get excited about. IMO, they are not nearly at the level of an AR 4x for example. I think I sold my pristine pair for $50 +/- last year. You must watch out for disintegrating, corroding tweeter leads that are under the transparent tweeter cones. Those leads, if broken, are very difficult to repair. I can tell you more if you have further questions.

Yes, they look a bit like the Heathkit Legato, but they are considerably smaller. There's a JBL D123 inside each cabinet, but the cabinets are not likely to be from JBL.
