    no of course any suggestion is welcome… and of course I'd love to have vintage-y equipment* because of my age (long story short: I went to look for my teenage years equipment which I knew were on some basements somewhere, didn't find it but turned out with a free pair of AR's and a Technics amp plus my old Pioneer turntable… prettyyy prettyyy good I'd say; my observation was based on the *free* aspect of the haul)

    *lazy as I am I ended up hooking it to my iMac… but lossless audio turned out good on it, maybe some purist will have a heart attack about this but it's all my fault

    thanks for your input, maybe I'll try and look for a different amp maybe in a not-so-damp basement ;) 
    btw the insides look fine, no rust or aging, just dust and the strongest (tobacco) smoke smell… I guess it just sat in an apartment, not used very much and when the owner passed away the amp was stored in the basement (maybe like… 5 years or less?).

    maybe I should just crank it up to eleven and drive those AR18LS :D

    guess I'll see if somewhere in my town there's someone who could do the job, the refoaming was done by Hi Fi Club Uniaudio in Milano ( https://goo.gl/maps/3XHUkovMHzvuuD1Q6 ), seemed like a great place for HiFi (honesty, courtesy and professionalism) but it's a bit too far from me for just a cap resoldering… ;)

    Hi all,

    sorry to jump on an old post but: I found an old pair of AR18LS (euro version of the AR18s ?) and got them refoamed and paired to a Technics SU-8044 amp.

    I am a total hifi noob but I'd like to ask you what would be the advantage in getting the capacitor replaced (enhanced sound in some ranges, durability or what else?).

    Living in an apartment I can't really push them so I add a bit of eq especially on the low end, other than that they seem to sound nice… again, not an expert, just a music lover.
     

    I attach a pic, also have the grilles and the logos but I prefer them without.

    p.s. is there something I should check on the amp too? was found in a humid basement and maybe owned by a heavy smoker… I cleaned the insides (veeery dirty) and cleaned all the pots but I'm no electronical expert alas

    Those are great little speakers - - they are the Euro version of the AR-18s that were sold in the USA. Replace the foams and the single 5uF cap (simplest crossover ever) and you'll be very pleasantly surprised. The tweeters  are terrific and the bass output is impressive.

    Hi precious forumers,

    I just rescued a pair of old AR 18LS, that (together with a Technics SU-8044 and a Pioneer PL5) should build my initial budget setup to listen to some old rock vinyls.

    Are those speakers worth refoaming and checking (for approx 100€), and how those compare to newer fancier budget speakers like i.e. Elac Debut B5, Mission  LX2 or Q Acoustics 3020i (which I eyed before scoring this pair of AR's)? Pardon my noobiness, and thanks ;)
