Guest mainstay
The "brick" reads 4 MFD (black) for the tweet and 6 MFD (green) for the mid. I've measured 6.7 MFD and 9.5 MFD, respectively, for Spkr 1. Spkr 2 is 5.3 MFD and 8.4 MFD. Both clearly out of spec, right? My question is what do I replace these with to be true to their original sound? Recommendations on specific brands/values would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, main
Drewb
I just got done with a crossover rebuild on my AR2ax's. Like you I noticed that the cap values were high. After some searching on the web I found out that this was due to the dielectric breaking down over time and was a good indicator of a leaky cap.I replaced the caps with Solen fast caps bypassed (paralleled) by Dayton film and foil caps. The result is amazing. The music is detailed and all there. It is like pulling a mask off.I have the cloth woofer surround. I used Butyl rubber caulk thinned with Xylene to make a "paint". I added thin coats till I couldn't see through in sunlight. I then put on a top coat of car vinyl conditioner. This brought the bass back to life. Very tight and solid. I can now see why these were such a desirable speaker in their day.
