abrasiveguy
I want to replace the 6uf capacitors in my AR3a's but am confused about the soldering procedure. Are the wire leads on the capacitors made of aluminum? If so, can they be soldered directly to stranded copper wire? I would like to use the existing wires from the "wax box" capacitor to simplify the installation. All of the soldering flux that I have looked at states that it should not be used on aluminum...what is the solution?? Any "how to" advice would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. DavidR
Capacitor leads are typically tinned copper (tin and copper mix) and would have the appearance of being aluminum or similarly colored metal. Solder away or you could use wire nuts.
abrasiveguy
Thanks DavidR, I was told by the Parts Express tech dept that the capacitor wires were aluminum. Thanks for the clarification. Is it OK to use the existing wires from the "wax box" capacitor to splice in the new cap?
DavidR
Exactly what caps did they say that about? On your second question I would think so but wait for someone to respond who has work on that model. I'm more of a Teledyne era guy. I'll look for a thread by someone who has done this. BTW, there is a thread at the top regarding restoring the 3a. It's excellent and done by the pros here.
abrasiveguy
He was speaking of caps in general. The caps I purchased are Dayton Audio PMPC 6.2uf. Thanks again.
DavidR
From Parts Express website: • Extra-thick tinned copper leads. I've used many Daytons. Must be a new guy. BTW, Dayton film caps are most likely made by Bennic Here's a link for a thread on an AR5 rebuild that uses the wires. Some good pictures.
