DavidR
I saw these AR5 speakers on CL. The tweeters do not look original. Can anyone confirm this? http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/ele/5820005273.html
JKent
The tweets say Teledyne on them so I'd say they're later, but I can't identify them. Probably another member can. -Kent
DavidR
Thanks Kent. That's what I thought, too. They look similar to the tweets used on the 9 series speakers except for the 3 dobs of foam(?) around the dome.
JKent
Yeah--maybe those were added for cosmetics, so they "look" original" I dunno.
stupidhead
the curious thing is the wires are present for the front wired OEM tweets, but they appear to be threaded between the baffle and back side of driver. While they are AR drivers my guess is they are not OEM and I would be dubious about the approach for this conversion. Actually quite easy to wire from the back side, this suggests whoever did this work took short cuts at least! Also the foams that were used do not appear to be the filled filet (BA) style which are generally accepted as the best foam to achieve the best compliance. Otherwise good looking set, if I didn't already have two sets I might have made the seller an offer as I am local. Geoff
DavidR
The owner/seller just got back to me and they say they are original. Did Teledyne buy out AR in 1967 or 1976 ?
JKent
According to Wikipedia (and you know it's always accurate ) Quote In 1967, Acoustic Research was bought by Teledyne, Inc., and for the next 22 years it continued development and operations in Cambridge as Teledyne Acoustic Research. DavidR
So Teledyne ID on the tweeter could be OK.
stupidhead
you do see the front wiring terminals on the baffle right. I am no expert but I doubt AR tucked those wires under the driver like that, just seems like a sketchy approach to me. Possibly they are correct replacement drivers however, again I am not an expert. genek
Looks to me like the front plate of a 9 series tweeter bolted on top of an original front wired tweeter. Notice how the plate seems to be "floating" over the front baffle rather than being set into it.
owlsplace
Agree with Gene. Here is the photo for future reference: Any bets on that being an 80s era 200029-1 tweeter with an AR-5 dome glued on top? The screws and rivets are missing though. ra.ra
I think genek nailed it - - - the missing four screws suggest that the top plate is independent of the functioning driver, and the three foam "dobs" suggest an original tweeter. RoyC
I agree with Gene as well. It appears the midrange leads are crossed. I have only seen this in early AR-5's. Roy
