frankmarsi
7-19-16 I can’t go just yet. I’m waiting for the paint to dry on that new wall, while watching the new grass seeds grow outside, I’m waiting for the dough to rise, I’m constipated, I have an appointment with my proctologist, I need new shoes, my cards are maxed out. I have to be here to watch my investments drop, the cows haven’t returned home yet, I’m waiting for the rogain to take affect, the ‘E.D.’ drug hasn’t kicked in yet. I also have to be here in case my ex-lover from 35 years ago returns cause, she was the best. Also, I’m waiting for America to be great again, I only buy American………… But seriously folks, I wonder if these were built in the USA or England, did they build this size AR abroad? I presume they were built there because the shipping weight costs were probably nuts. But, can you imagine the shipping costs from there to here today? I would guess more than $400.+ USD. I still haven’t heard a definitive answer as to how many LST’s were ever built in total, anyone really know? Although the seller claims the tweeters are working, chances are slim they actually operate on par after all these years? So right there, the cost is built-in for new ones, although I do feel they are certainly worth restoring. But gees, those woofers look like they were in a dust storm. Then there’s the fact that I should be doing more listening to music, instead of simply restoring, re-building, etc. One can get carried away with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of things almost forgetting the original goal, which is the pleasure of listening. Besides, “owlsplace", you seem more deserving to be an owner of these LSTs, if for no other reason than to experience the thrilling sound these speakers offer. I can’t begin to put into words the almost ethereal sound quality they have and the reaction one has by hearing music through these speakers. Everyone I’ve tied down to a chair and forced them to spend more than 60 minutes of listening has been more than amazed and very impressed! It's usually; "I never heard a stereo sound this good!", or; "I wish I never sold my stereo". Most times it's; "Oh my, I don't believe that's a vinyl record!". Then I'll tell these folks; "hey those speakers are over 44 years old". When they hear that, they're usually flabbergasted and rendered speechless. It's usually a jaw-dropping experience for everyone involved. Please, don’t get me started. I do enjoy bragging if given the opportunity. Quite simply put, no amount of bragging can actually describe the excellence of sound quality which they can reproduce. The way they fill the air and the room in a way that can only be fully appreciated by a person who truly loves music and all of the pleasure and emotional response that music portrays about living 'life'. I told you not to let me start bragging. Of course there's more but, I'll spare you this one time only. Next time, you'll have to hear for yourself. FM P.S. And thank goodness, “I don’t need no stinking badges”

Frank. Who needs music... when you can concentrate in rebuilding something so close to factory specs as possible. This "nuts and bolts" thing seems to be enough for me. Frankly buying something "new" gear might be more cost effective way to listen music, but if this "nuts and bolts" thing is way to go who cares? Kimmo Kimmo, I think that I understand what you're saying? But, something tells me that you are being facetious. Tell me and all here, what is the point of building something unless you can truly enjoy it for what it is? History has it that the man who designed and over-saw the building of the "Brooklyn Bridge" died just before its completion, how sad was that? The "Pharaohs" of ancient Egypt all died before most of their larger structures were finished, now that's a bummer! Just one more thing, you don't want to be me, cause it's not easy being me and I have problems in life just like everyone else, who doesn't? Certainly, segments of my life have been most glorious, almost minimizing listening to AR-LSTs. Many times being more glorious than most men do-dream about in a lifetime. But, that's another story............................................................................ Please, don't get me wrong as I'm very happy to be on this site whereas some other audio sites are snobbish, elitist, or just too plain rich for my pockets. And as far as I know, this is the only dedicated site of its kind that is so specialized about one speaker maker only. Sure, there are many sites for different components, but this site is more like a neighborhood with close folks who are easy to get along with. I myself take great pride in sometimes being the village jester as I know that it is almost like being with-in the family and every family has at least one clown. We all must also pay attention and with respect for the few prized individuals who infrequently visit this site as many have moved on or I don't know where they may have ended up. Here, we should be mindful of the few who do remain and or at least should be our mentors and leaders because they have a wealth of information and experience. I'm certainly not one of them but, folks like RoyC, TomT., SteveF, Soundminded, Carl, Minh, and many more that at this moment I can't recall are the 'real-ones' we should all pay maximum attention to and be grateful they share their knowledge. To me a man blessed is not only so because he has good personal qualities but, because of the good people who surround him. Amen, ma brutha! Can I have a Hell-Yeah? FM P.S. Kimmo, if you're so inclined, look back to earlier posts because since 2004 I have always been the raving maniac without any technical input, just silliness and personal perceptions of owning AR speakers. Whether or not that is welcomed might be a different story but, here they let me go on my merry and very silly way. Eh! Kimmo, you mention 'nut and bolts' do you? Well, if you ever saw my basement and garage, then you'd see the most accurate definition of that phrase because what I surround myself with is not only too many AR speakers, too many amps, too many turntables and cartridges but, also old hand tools from the 1920's, along with screws, bolts, square-head nuts, saws, files, and electrical parts that were phased out more than 50 years ago. Yes, a virtual cornucopia of junk, but, by those who know, great stuff. Yet to me, it's a treasure trove of wonderful things that few besides myself can or do fully appreciate what I can enjoy myself by just looking at it all this great stuff. Amen! Whenever I have a guest or two, and they see how many vinyl records I own, they really think I'm ? Then, I reward them with how great a well recorded and clean vinyl record can give them a tingly feeling. fm

Kimmo True ... as much as I marvel at the old LST's they remain beyond me which is the way it should be ... reminds me of the old PDQ Bach skit where Schickele has Bach saying something like, "Don't send me anymore gifts, I can't afford them." Roger Growing up, I was taught that 'hope springs eternal' by my oldest sister, she was NYC school teacher for over 25 years. She was the one who taught me to appreciate all types of music, mostly classical though. In NYC, in 1987, I found a hardly used Revox A77 Mk4 along with a lesser Sony 7 inch tape machine in the trash. It worked fine the first time I tried it and has ever since. The 10 &1/2 inch reel to reel A77 is a great tape machine, once considered the world's standard. I still use it and is proudly part of my main system. I also found 2 EPI-100s in someone's trash, they only needed surrounds. Nevada is big sky country, no telling what you might find out there? Whenever I see a pile of garbage I slow down the car, stop and scope it out. If I'm moving too fast, I'll make a U-turn and go back and quickly pick through it. Where I live now, it seems to be the local habit of placing items on people's front lawn whenever they throw something out they think someone else might need or want. Usually, it's not something I want but, I'm happy it's a trend out here and I just know that one day I will find some AR speakers or more. owlsplace
Frank, Your sister deserves an award. A77 in the trash is hard to imagine ... I decided Tandberg was more to my taste back in the 70's as I didn't need the big reels and Dolby was nice. I did go on to use a Nagra IVs in later years professionally. I admire your little niche and that is why I'm prone to egg you on occasionally. Roger
