AR 3A midrange repair

One of my midranges stopped working. I replaced both midranges with simply speakers. I read that there was someone in the New York State area that would rebuild both original speakers but I can't seem to find their information now! Any information would be great. Thank You!

Hi Bill, sorry that I can't help you but I am in the same situation. One mid has given up. I would be greatful for any information or knowledge on how to refurbish these gems if there are bits of geniuiety that haven't been put forward yet to the forum.

The more we experiment in blindness the more of salvageable mids and tweeters we destroy. So please step forward and spread your knowledge before we needing guidance destroy too much.

Regards

I'm in New York and have had some success refurbishing AR-3 mids, not AR-3a mids, for myself as well as NY based "Vintage AR". I am not aware of anyone who has had much luck repairing the AR-3a mid, which is constructed differently than the AR-3 mid. Fortunately the 3a mid usually either works or it doesn't work, with none of the typical low output issues exhibited by otherwise functioning AR-3 mids.

Roy,

What do you usually find wrong with these non-functioning  mids?

Hi David,

The AR-3 mid most often suffers from broken (aluminum) voice coil leads at, or just under, the dome, and petrified white material covering the suspension and voice coil gap...preventing the dome from moving properly. The white stuff was paste or grease-like when new, and was apparently intended to protect the voice coil gap. It is usually found to be very stiff and rubbery, or rigid and caked in the gap.

AR-3a mids will usually have broken leads at the dome, and magnets will sometimes fall off due to glue failure.
