Liangshan Marsh
Hi! Just saw this ads pops up for this week local Estate sales, there are two speakers that looks like the AR-1 .... but so strange this one has extra a tweeter so does anyone know the AR-1 speaker having the option extra a tweeter...? So I would like to need the help identifying this pair If this is some kind of AR speaker I am definitely to buy it. Be very appreciate and many thanks for all the help or suggestion. Regards Liangshan.
Sonnar
AR 1 , early prototype in the first picture. As You can see, woofer is larger and placed down in the basement of the speaker. The mid-highs cone is an Altec/WE 755 , AR tweeters appears in 1958. The speaker showed in Your pics has a very similar furniture , but I don' t believe it could be an AR speaker. Liangshan Marsh
Yes Sonnar, Look at the grills and the front frame veneer, It is very similar to AR style. Just the strange thing when seeing a three faint images speaker driver through the grills.. In the pic this pair is driven by the Fisher tuner amplifier TA-600 or TA-800. I will buy the Fisher AMP if all the tubes are still good and the price under $300, for my spare parts Fisher 500B/ TA-600 they are both sounding so sweet to my AR3s/3a.. BTW do you like soccer Sonar..? I enjoyed listen music while watching Italia series A every weekend.
Sonnar
You 're right, it' s very similar but in my opinion proportions aren' t identical to AR 3's furniture : also the grille it' s very similar to AR 3 Saran , but not identical. Many speakers from '50 and '60 had the thick molding frame just like AR 3 . You may ask to the seller when You call him to buy The Fisher . Sorry , probably I 'm the only italian who doesn' t know anything about soccer , the only sport I 've ever practiced is weight lifting , and I mean heavy speakers! Liangshan Marsh
Yup! Thanks for your opinion Sonnar, I just saw Ebay listing the huge AR classic 30 , 153 pounds, produce 1992-1994 , $2200 each... Nowthey list only $900 pair , make offer... may be this is the best deal ever on the AR-30 sold recently.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ACOUSTIC-RESEARCH-CLASSIC-30-SPEAKERS-/141971392130?hash=item210e278682:g:cYMAAOSwxp9W31~z
Sonnar
I don' t know AR classic 30 speakers, my appreciation for AR speakers is only for original models , AR 3 and 3a. In 42 years of hi-fi listening I 've had many excellent speakers, AR 10Pi, Allison One, Magneplanar Tympani T1D, Bowers&Wilkins DM6 , and many others from friends , Kef 105, B&W 801 : everyone was a great speaker but still a loudspeaker. AR 3 and 3a are musical instruments, You can hear only the music, not the loudspeaker.
Liangshan Marsh
Agree with your thoughtful about the original AR speakers.. I am just wonder about the original huge price of the AR classic 30 , how its sounding if it compares to the later high end AR-9 speaker.. In particular from a different angle I had heard some one talking about the Quad Electrostatic ESL 57 Speakers, they said :'' best most relaxed sound, all details in music are right in front of you when you listen." I am really not know about the vintage Quad speakers but my friends had owned and said the classic Quad 44/405-2 Amp/Pre-amp, It played excellently with AR3s/3a/2/a/ax/4/4x..etc.
Sonnar
I have a workmate with original Quad ESL 57, he uses Quad II tube amps / Conrad-Johnson PV10 preamp to drive it. Excellent mids and highs, shiny and natural , but very poor bass response. Low dynamic range, the ESL 57 has very low sensitivity but you can' t use powerful amps. Another problem is directivity. With AR 3 or 3a you have the same quality on mid-highs, with powerful, deep and clean bass response , excellent dispersion and if you have a very powerful amp, a great dynamic range. Thanks so much for the practical information about the Quad speaker, Sonnar.. Cheers!
Liangshan Marsh
Just got back from the Estate sales and hit a big score with the Fisher tuner amplifier TA-600, at an unbelievable steal price $20, about the speaker It is a custom built speaker with very nice gold thread grilles, hard mounting in the wall, using the flash light shines through the grill, it is not an AR, JBL or Altec driver, can't see the name of the woofer..Anyway the speaker stays with the house.. ar_pro
I believe the TA-600 was Fisher's first stereo receiver; $20 is an outstanding price - congratulations!
Liangshan Marsh
Thanks ar_pro! When I saw the ads wishing It is a model TA-800 with the bigger power,( 32w/c)and a popular 2 pairs of 7591 power tubes but this one is TA-600 that is not much power (23w/c), Just plugged in and sounded very weak, needing to replace some tube and some pairs 12ax7 measuring still good. So just leaving there as spare parts for my other TA-600.
ra.ra
The green speakers shown in the original post reminded me of this pair that was for sale in Michigan a few years ago. And yes, that looks like a really fun Fisher unit - congrats!
Liangshan Marsh
Thanks Ra.Ra! Yeah this morning when I stepped down to the basement glancing at a green pair with woofer and midrange that are almost the same size with the AR-1. With a little heart beating I hope It might some one built the custom cabinet for the AR-1 inside with extra adapter tweeter, putting outside in top of the AR-1 cabinet.... but when I shined the flash light through the grilles, totally hopeless.... a lot of stuffs as lp's, turntable $75... but I have no time to dig out.. I had tracing Estatesales.net/Co every week for over three years but never seen any AR-3s/3a, AR-AU amplifier, just one pair AR-4x mint,$150 missed, triple pairs 2ax,that I got a nice one $200... so far so good. I love treasure finding: https://www.estatesales.net/ ( This sale is using as an article for this thread https://www.estatesales.net/CO/Denver/80236/1175913 )
