tomknow
I have been reading posts from the forums and am trying to recap a pair of KLH Model Twenty Four speakers. Mine have a red cap labeled "Planet Red 2x2 MFD Black Com 50V". I do not see any resistor to the tweeter as mentioned in other posts. Can someone assist with telling me what parts I will need and step by step instructions? thanks, this is my first speaker restore project so I need help! Also..Tweeters produce good sound, but NOT thru the crossover. Is this a new(ER) cap that someone may have installed since the originals? JKent
Hi Tom and welcome to CSP! That cap is two 2uF capacitors in one body. You'll have to trace the red leads and see if they both go to the same place, in which case you can use one 4uF cap, or if they really do go to two different spots in which case you would replace the one big red cap with two 2uF caps. I "had" some 24s at one point but can't find my photos. Looks like the xo is just the cap(s) and inductor. -Kent PS: Just found my pics. Mine had a 15uF, an 8uF and a 3 ohm resistor plus the inductor. Don't know what's going on with yours. Be sure to pull all the fiberglass out and see if there are more components in there. -K
ra.ra
Here is more information than you will need to figure out your situation. I have not read all of this in depth, but it appears there may be as many as three versions of crossover for the model twenty-four speaker. Some speakers had an RCA jack and came with the KLH-24 turntable, and apparently there was also a Series II version of this speaker. It is a little difficult to read the print on your red capacitor, but it does appear to be the dual cap, as you have noted with the 2x2 notation, which is well covered in these threads. For under $10, you could purchase new caps for both speakers (4 total) - - my personal choice would be the least expensive 5% Daytons, which would be perfect for these speakers. http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/klh-24-crossover-capacitor-s.118320/ http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/klh-model-24-crossover-help.347370/#post-4339981 http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/advice-needed-on-restoring-klh-twenty-fours.229937/#post-2748602 http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/two-crossover-circuits-for-klh-model-24.500553/ http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/speaker-recap-virgin-and-klh-24s.514796/#post-6696130 http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/klh-24-crossover.187347/
JKent
duh. Thanks Robert for reminding us of the various versions of the the 24. Sorry I had forgotten that. Anyway, Tom, ra.ra. gives good advice. -Kent
ra.ra
Clearly this is not the first instance of this type of confusion arising, and not unlike sub-versions within a speaker model like the AR-6, sometimes the variation of components in the crossover can be substantial. The extensive line of speaker models manufactured by KLH continues to confound me, and it becomes even more baffling when a single model (i.e. KLH-24) has at least three variants. And Kent, just like you, I always have to go back to filed in-process pics or data on notecards to recall the specifics from any past project. Must have been a KLH plot There were FIVE different KLH Model Twenty-One radios!
tomknow
Thank you all, extremely helpful. Hope to get to these tomorrow. Upon further searching the speakers...NO resistor is present, just this red single cap and the copper inductor.
tomknow
Completed the recap this am. Thank you all for this valuable assistance. I went w the erse (16 and 8)and new resistors and it all works. Where I had no sound from either tweeter, I now have sound and its very nice. Now on to the Model 17's I picked up. JKent
17s are really nice. Be sure to find all the caps (I think one is inline with the tweeter lead). There should be a schematic in the CSP Library. Keep us posted! -Kent
tomknow
Completed the recap on the KLH 17's. Very impressive sounds! Thanks again to all, invaluable info here for a newbie. Will be working on the cabinets and grills next. Learning to read schematics is fun.
