Horswispr
I just posted this review of the KLH 23s to Epinions. Given that they have different crossover points, shouldn't the 23s and 6s sound substantially different? To me they sound quite similar, with the 23s sounding maybe a bit warmer. Has anybody had a chance to A-B the two? I invite comments, both about the speakers and the review.http://www.epinions.com/review/KLH_Model_23_epi/content_574223650436
west coast
I own both the KLH 23 and 6. Both have been used with a Marantz 2245 and Kenwood Model 500 Supreme. With the old caps in I found the 23 a bit bass heavy (boom, boom, boom) and really preferred the 6's because they just seemed smoother overall. I recapped the 23's recently and they now sound smoother. The old caps measured 2.2 and 4.76. They were replaced with Dayton 5% from PE. I need to now recap the 6's to really know how they compare. The caps are sitting in the basement due to unforeseen circumstances. I received the tweeters for my restored AR5's within a day of recapping the 23's, and a day later found a local mint pair of Yamaha NS1000M's , so the 6 recap is on hold. I need to decide which of the KLH's are going to stay, and which will be going (My guess is that if I find some 5's they will both be gone). The basement system just has too many speakers including a pair of Klipsch Heresy I's that have been recapped using Sonicaps and a pair of Yamaha NS650's and NS200M's. Horswispr
Thanks for the response! Be sure to post your findings. I don't have a pair of 23s right now. Interestingly, I just re-recapped (not a typo) one of my KLH 6 pairs this AM and found that I can hear a difference between 6.8s and 8.2s. I had recapped that pair of 6s with 6.8s because that's what I had. I figured a tiny BBC dip would push the soundstage back, but it actually isolated the highs slightly. making the speakers sound LESS smooth. So I went in this AM and put 8.2s in (Dayton 5%) and the sound is much smoother. Many people swear by the 5s, but I have a thing for two-ways. The one pair of 5s I've heard didn't sound that great, but I think they probably needed new caps. All the drivers were working, but the speakers sounded...lifeless...Anyway, thanks for the response.
