desalesg
I have a pair of Advent Legacy II speakers that I recently reconed. I have read that there is a crossover upgrade that should be done as well. Evidently when these speakers were produced they "Advent" used cheap components in their crossovers. We can now upgrade these components to newer highter quality items. My question is what modifications need to be done an how? Schematic and parts list would be helpful. I am new to this forum any advice would be helpful. I see someone is selling a upgrade "kit" on ebay. They want like $40 for the kit, I feel this is a little steep for $5 worth of capacitors and stuff, and an instruction manual. Any Help? THANKS in advance, and have a great day. JKent
Hi and welcome to CSP!I looked at that upgrade kit. All it is, is new capacitors and a little solder. Here's what you can do: Remove the 4 screws that are used to attach the speaker terminal cup to the back of the speaker. Pull it out and you will see the crossover.Take a look at ebay item #230665618138. It shows what the crossover looks like. Those 2 light blue tubes are the caps. They will be marked with their values in MFD or uF (microfarads) and volts. Don't bother with the volts--you just need to know the MFD.The upgrade kit being sold appears to have Dayton caps but you can use any poly caps you want. Daytons are fine. So are Solens. Both available from parts express. Or, less expensive Carli caps from Madisound or Erse caps from erseaudio. Then just desolder the originals and install the new caps. The new ones are much bigger than the originals so you may have to alter the mounting arrangement. Carli caps are relatively small.Have you inspected the woofer surrounds? That would be a much more important (and essential) "upgrade". (edit: oops! I see you reconed them!)KentPS:Here are a couple of links. Apparently you have a 6uF and a 32uFhttp://www.audiokarm...ad.php?t=193599http://audiokarma.or...ad.php?t=365775There are many ways to approach the recap. Carli caps are available in 6, 12 and 20uF. Just use the 20 & 12 in parallel:http://www.madisound...rli-capacitors/or two Bennic 16uF: http://www.madisound...oly-cap-250vdc/Solens come in 6 and 30 (close enough or add a 2 in parallel). Some people like to use a “better” cap for the tweeter. This Clarity is good and not too expensive, but it is big: http://www.madisound...propylene-caps/If you do need to refoam the woofers you will have lots of room to work inside. If I were doing it, I may use Carlis (20&12) for the woofer and either Carli of Clarity for the tweet.

THANKS in advance, and have a great day.See attached photo of the Advent Legacy II crossover and schematic. The "upgrade" kit on Ebay replaces the original electrolytic capacitors with film caps. As Kent mentioned, they appear to be Daytons sold by Parts Express...I'm guessing 30uf and 6.2uf. The cost from Parts Express for these caps is $25+/- total for your pair of Advents. The original caps are Culver 20% tolerance electrolytics (6uf and 32uf), and it would be inexpensive to replace them with new electrolytic caps (as you said, $5+/-). This crossover places the 2 caps in series with the tweeter, so there will be a definite reduction in esr (equivalent series resistance) if you make the switch to film caps. Whether this translates to an "improvement" is questionable. There are no level controls to compensate if the tweeters become too bright as a consequence of less resistance in the tweeter circuit. On the other hand a switch to film caps could result in an improvement. As an aside, I have measured a number of electrolytic crossover caps from this era of Advent, and have not a found a "bad" one yet.RoyLegacy Xover Schematic.bmp
desalesg
Thank you so much for the replys! I wasn't expecting such accurate and exact details to my questions. I will modify my crossovers and let you know if they actually improve the sound.
bikdav
This is great information. I think some old Large Advents that I took apart had a crossover scheme that was close (but, not exact obviously) to this one.
