dynaco_dan Posted April 24, 2011 Report Share Posted April 24, 2011 Hi thereI used this topic title so that we can add to it as other information and or brands come along.This topic is for all brands of speakers, not one specific brand.The only issue that jumps out at me is that the Advent/1 uses several different model fuses.All slow blow, but not just the Bussmann FNM or Littlefuse FLM types.I have never read any other mention of different models of fuses, in the same brand of speaker, of course, in any of my readings over the years.There is possibly speaker systems that individually fuse their different drivers.There has never, in my experience at least, suggestion of fast and/or slow fuses on the same speaker.It would have been great if the manufacturers had exited connections for the purpose of individualy fusing drivers.With the high cost of these particular fuses and their fuseholders, as well as their availablity or lack thereof, it is well worth while that we discus this subject.There is a few conflicting fuse sizes recommended on the AR fusing sheets.Originally when I posted those different sheets, I felt that they all should be posted, not just the latest, perhaps.The earliest sheets did not have the future models, of course, and not all sheets listed every model as well. I will be posting all of the fusing literature and photos that I have here shortly.There will be some duplication with our library, but, I feel that this is a specialized topic and we need to keep all relative information as readily available as possible for future reference.I do not have all fusing information or knowledge.I welcome any added information or suggestions.If I may suggest, let me add that new information or photo here for you in this original writeup.It appears that I can edit my writeups for several years back.That way this information is in one single folder rather than stretched a long way down onto separate pages, getting buried deeper into the pile of other topics.Some photos were posted by members, or off the internet from different sources, without their permission.I tried to show the different methods of attaching fuseholders to cabinets as well.This certainly is not all encompassing to say the least.Electro Sonic 2002 catalog listed the Bussmann FNM-2 amp slow blow fuse at $4.68 each here in Vancouver BC.As you can see, pdf files can give you a visual description without them being downloaded, jpg files need to be looked at or downloaded to see their description.I believe that the Dahlquist DQ-10 also has a fuseholder, which I do not have a photo of.Missing still is also the AR-LST fuseholder photo.Obviously .PDF is a better way to go and save when scanning.I learn a little more each day.Monday 20110425 UPDATEI made that supplier an offer they can't refuse.No, not like in the movie, The Godfather, LOLActually I emailed, Nancy, a suggestion, I will post the suggestion and response after I receive a reply.Tuesday 20110426 UPDATEIn my email I suggested that, I was inquiring for everyone worldwide, not specifically for myself, a previous customer.I tried to be honest and mentioned that the reality is maybe a purchase of 5 or 10 fuses would be a more realistic order.A suggestion that the $15.00 minimum purchase amount and/or $10.00 minimum S&H charge maybe could be reduced.Also mentioned was Kent's reference writeup about those NOS Rogan Bros 8-904 knobs which are generally limited to 8 for a pair of KLH Twelves.I received a reply from, Nancy, this morning."I reduced the fuse price quite a bit. AR, Advent (& KLH?) recommend slow-blow. Then again, one would think ANY fuse element in the path could degrade the sound. I bought some fuses and holders from an eBay seller but never installed them. I've never blown a tweeter, so figured why risk degrading the sound.KentHi againI always make reference to open style fuseholders.These allow the fuse to cool somewhat.The typical chassis mounted type is the one mounted near the power cord on the back of the amp or ? and has a screw type cap that needs removed to replace and inspect the fuse.This type does not allow the fuse to cool at all, as it is fairly well air tight.There also is the black square chassis mounted fuseholder where you push the cap inword and the spring pushes the cap and fuse out.Use caution that you do not push the square fuse cap into the socket body without a fuse, you may need to break it to remove the cap and they are made up of unobtainium, of course, or red, or white when available.Whereas all drawings that I have seen have the fuses mounted behind the speaker, or at least inline, my thoughts are leaning towards having them safely mounted behind the amplifiers.Access to the fuseholder is very important but if there is a chance that the speaker cable can be stepped onor shorted by the bed or chesterfield legs then that is a likelyhood.With the fuse nearest the amp, if there should be a short, the fuse will also protect the amp.Be careful that the amp output end of the fuseholder does not touch the amp or other stereo piece of equipment.Just another thought for today.The left photo is the open style fuseholder.The rightmost square cap is prone to breaking if manhandled too much.
