Thanks Mark;

I would ask that all members that have a favourite or many favourite soundtracks, cd's, records, artists, bands or technical recordings add to a list here.

Records may not be the main source but sometimes something is only available on that source.

Artist, band, cd #, song title, cd title, cd label maker and a brief commentary about why it is your favourite demo.

No, sorry no prize for the best or most entries.

I will then add whatever is listed to the database I have already started and will every so often download a completely updated database list.

The present list is not complete and more information can be added or changed at anytime.

The beauty of a computer.

The database is under 50k in size and Access/dBase compatible.

Hi Vern,

I just burned an "audition disc" of the music I use to evaluate equipment. These are just my personal preferences-recordings that I am extremely familiar with and have enough subtlties that allow me to hear differences between components/speakers.

Here is the list in no order of importance:

Grover Washington Jr.-THEN AND NOW track 1, "Blues for D.P."

Fleetwood Mac-FLEETWOOD MAC track 5, "Over My Head"

Phoebe Snow-SECOND CHILDHOOD track 10, "There's A Boat That's Leavin'

Soon For New York"

G. Handel-HANDEL OVERTURES-Track 5,-Label/Catalogue #:Archiv 419 219-2

Berlioz-Fantastic Symphony "Un Bal"-Philips 411 425 2

Saint Saens-Symphony #3 "Organ Symphony"- 2nd movement

Philips 412 619 -2

Little Feat WAITING FOR COLUMBUS disc 1, track 12, "Spanish Moon" and disc 2, track 1, "Willin'"

I also have a homemade CD of favorite evaluation tracks. The details were published in the last issue of Speaker Builder Magazine in 2000. They were printed on the last page. Thus, I have the unique 'honor' of being published on the last page of the last issue of Speaker Builder before it was amalgamated with some other audio-related publications into audioXpress magazine published by Audio Amateur Corp. Peterborough, NH.

If I were searching around for speakers and I could take only one vinyl record with me it would be Paul Simon (that's the title also). This is a late 70's early 80's record. 1st cut on side one "Mother and Child Reunion" and 1st cut on side two "Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard" are terrifically recorded.

the album I have is actually a 4 channel "SQ" quad album made back when they tried 4 channel vinyl. However, the recording is just as good when played in 2 channel mode.

Hi Bill;

I have listened to your favourite one, several times, nice cut, nice artist.

How did you like Cecelia by Simon and Garfunkle?

When Big Bros and I used to go out for a weekend listening session, an opportunity to hear a complete Janszen system came up.

Cecelia was ringing in my ears for hours afterwards, loud, clear and loud. lol

I've found Bob Katz's "CD Honor Roll" to be a good list. Note that one of the main points in the discussion is "level":

Should mention that many of these are not my artistic favorites.

If one is listening in a development situation, you usually can't afford to spend much more than 2 or 3 minutes on each minor revision check, since there will probably be hundreds. I've learned, with practice, that playing 10 very short, standard clips can allow me to understand 95% of any speaker's behavior within 3 or 4 minutes. (I suspect any pro guitar player or mix engineer would say a similar thing.)

I've burned a CDR with these snippets, plus pink noise, spot tones, an a few of my own favorite test signals. It's not as much fun as recreational listening, but it gets to the point. Also, the recordings chosen are not necessarity the overall best I know. They just happen to contain some distinct individual elements or aspects that rapidly let me assess a system.

I don't want to look up at the in/out points at the moment, (sorry...), but here are a few of the tracks I use:

Liz Phair, "Soap Star Joe"

Lou Reed, "Dirty Blvd."

Madonna, "Ray of Light"

Suzanne Vega, "99.9F"

Coolio, "I Remember"

John Zorn, Something from Naked City

Los Lobos, "Dream in Blue"

Kari Bremnes, "MÃ¥nens Kraft"
