AR 2ax stuffing replacement?

Hi, I have just removed the woofers from my 2ax's for re-foaming and discovered that the stuffing material in each cabinet doesn't seem to be fibreglass or Rockwool. I can't find any previous reference to the material elsewhere in the forum and I'm wondering if I should simply replace it or switch to something else?

My stuffing material is wool like and a nice shade of maroon/puple with traces of red & blue material randomly spread throughout. This doesn't appear to be Rockwall, and definitely isn't fibreglass. In fact my best way of describing it would be it just like the 'fluff' that fills up my Hoover bag after hoovering the carpets! And it's not at all itchy to handle.

I have kept the material seperate from each cabinet, and now wonder if I should simply replace it on rebuilding, or should I switch to fibreglass?

My 2ax's were UK market supplied and I have owned then from new, and the stuffing is factory original material.

What's your recommendations please?

Ian

Do a search here--I've seen discussion of that stuff along with photos. That's the original stuff used in the euro ARs and should be fine. I'd leave it alone. Good luck with the refoam and enjoy those speakers!

Thanks for the leads, I've decided to replace the original stuffing material.

Your call of course but it will probably not be an improvement. What you SHOULD do, if you have not already planned, is replace the capacitors (and clean the pots).

Hi Kent

I think you misunderstood me; I'm going to put back the original stuffing material, not change it! I also have new capacitors and have ordered new pots as well.

Sounds good. I've restored 2 pair of 2ax's. Sold one pair with new foam surrounds and Zen caps to a fellow CSP member and kept the other, with the old cloth surrounds, Dayton caps, L-pads (+ 25 ohm resistor) as the main speakers in my rec room. Hope you like them as much as I do.
