Hi I have been given a pair of AR speakers from the 80's. I need to replace the woofer and sub woofer but have no clue what the model is. I have searched everywhere to find them. A so called specialist advised me to put some gale WA-210 drivers in but i am not so sure. Any ideas? any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

The model you have is the AR94. It was a fine 3-way floor-standing speaker for not much money, and your versions were built in England. The two woofers work together in the deep-bass region; the upper woofer handles the midrange as well.

You should refoam the woofer surrounds first; the tweeters may be okay even though they are pushed in somewhat. The crossover probably should be updated with new capacitors, so you may need som assistance in doing these tasks. Do not buy a set of off-brand drivers to replace the ones installed; fix the ones you have. If you can't do that, we can supply you with the proper part numbers for replacement drivers, but they are scarce and difficult to locate on the internet auction sites.

Thanks a lot for the information! I found a refoaming kit for AR 94S on ebay from geoaliwil. i will attempt it myself i think. any tips? Should a novice really attempt this or would it be better to get a pro do it?

I think you should do the refoaming yourself, as it is not a terribly diffucult task, only tedious and time-consuming. Follow the instructions carefully, try to get a surround kit that matches the speaker closely, but preferably one that does not use fast-drying glue and the need for shims and new dust cap. Try to find a kit that uses the moderately slow-drying white glue, and proceed carefully. Most of these woofers will tend to "self-center" if you follow the re-foaming instructions, and you will not need shims in the voice coil. You should get excellent results! Once you've done this and have also checked the tweeters (you may need to remove them to check for continuity), you should see how the system sounds. You may or may not need to replace the crossover capacitors, but you can tell a lot by listening to the speakers once you have completed the first part.

Keep us posted on your work!
