AR 3a ???

The 3a you have seen on EBAY is the Europian version of american 3a. Speakers, crossover and sound were exactly the same as the american version, only the cabinet had a different look. Around the end of 1974 in Europe  was intoduced the "3a improved". It had the same cabinet and drivers as the former Europian 3a but it had a new crossover in order to improve hi-range performances.

The 3a-improved was manufactured until about 1977-78.

Here's evidence above that there is a large body of knowledge about AR on this site. This is very good information. I think that what you can see from this is that, for one, European music-lovers never liked the thick "AR-1-style" cabinet molding of the AR-3, AR-3a, and thus AR revamped the cabinet to make it more like the AR-2ax, AR-5, etc. For another, AR was entering the Advanced Development Division era back in the US, and the subsequent AR-3a Improved was a sort of Euro-version of the AR-11.

Finally! I've been wondering why I never saw this styling anywhere. My late brother moved to Florence, Italy in 1971 and bought a pair of AR3a speakers. I've since inherited them, but they looked nothing like what I remember AR3a's looking like. Now I know why. Thanks.
