Guest
I picked up a pair of ARs awhile back at the Salvation Army.I'm a little confused about what model they are though. The paper work on one of them lists it as an AR-3A. However the woofers in it look like AR-3 woofers. They are very different then what is in my LSTs.They have cloth surround (which is still intact) the ridges on the cone and a thick ring near the dustcap. The ring has cracked some on the woofers but appears to be OK other then that. The pots are shot on them and I wanted to order the crossover repair kit from Layne Audio but I wanted to make sure I get the correct version. Were there AR-3As built with AR-3 woofers or are these really AR-3s?Thanks,Shawn
charger3834
The Early AR-3a's used the AR-3 Woofer. About a year or two after the introduction of the AR-3a in 1967, they redesigned their 12" woofer. Both designs are very good.
charger3834
I should also mention that AR used to convert AR-3s to Ar-3as at their factory for $90.00/speaker. It is possible that your speakers started out life as AR-3s. In this conversion the original woofers would have been retained.
Guest
Thanks, were there crossover changes in the 3a with the two different woofers?I'm just curious if the 3a crossover upgrade kit and the extra woofer caps and coils at:http://speakersupply.com/AR.htmwould be proper for my ARs.Thanks!Shawn
