Guest
I have a pair of powered AR speakers circa 1980's. They are three-sided, about 6-8" tall, with a power button, green power light, volume and tone control on the front. No binding posts, just signal input. Can anyone tell me about these? Thanks. Guest Nigel
The speakers you describe were to be used with a walkman or similar personal tape player. They were not expensive, and basically came out after the fall of AR.Nigel
Guest
The AR Powered Partners were released around 1986 during the Teledyne era. They were intended for the mobile audio market i.e. cars, boats etc. but found many uses in the home due to the drivers being magnetically shielded, ideal for use with computer audio and home theatre. The units comprised of sealed aluminium housing with a 4 1/2 inch bass driver and 3/4 inch dome tweeter they were driven by an integral 20-watt amplifier. They will accept input from almost anything with a signal or headphone output, but don't plug into loudspeaker outputs. They can be powered either by 110 volt or 12 volt and it is possible to chain the units together using the outlet on the rear panel. There were a number of accessories for them including a carryall, a sealed 12-volt battery and car cigar lighter cables. They were the forerunners of a number of other similar systems like the Party Partners and the Rock Partners (basically an AR18 in a wedge shaped cabinet). They are a very robust unit, I have 2 pair and use them in theatre and TV as monitors and they receive a fair amount of abuse and they have yet to fail me.Steve
