Ready for BSC circuit for my stacked double New Large Advents

Well, after sometime listening to my stacked double New Large Advents I know I will need this circuit. I have them placed in my listening room according to the Cardas Golden Ratio and while they sound very good, the bass is weak and requires a substantial boost to make it satisfying. I'm hoping with BSC it will shore up the bass to satisfying levels without having to crank the bass control. I'm going to start with a 6dB circuit and run it through my preamp's processor loop. I know if I just push the speakers back to the wall the bass will open up, but then some of the desirable traits that are obtained through my existing placement will be lost. Any ideas beyond what I am supposing now?

Hi there;

If you need to boost the Advent's bass, you do have a problem.

There is no way that the Advent's need bass boost.

You may have them wired out of phase for one.

Their foam surrounds may be leaking.

The lower unit should be about 6" off the floor or slightly more, placing it's tweeter at your ear level when sitting.

The top cabinet should be upside down, so that the tweeters are close together.

I'll be curious to hear what you think, positive or not.

It is really mid bass and bass boost which compensates for the excessive

midrange output. Advents sound much more realistic with BSC, IMO.

Yeah, I said I did. I have to set the bass control on my preamp at 3 o'clock for bass levels that I enjoy.

Well, in my particular listening environment I stated I give them a boost.
You may have them wired out of phase for one.
Checked that, they are wired correctly.
Their foam surrounds may be leaking.
New foam surrounds, no leaks.

Ear level is at the intersection of both speakers.
The top cabinet should be upside down, so that the tweeters are close together.
Isn't that how double Advents are stacked, per the Absolute Sound article?

When I employ the BSC I'll report back. Thanks to all.

If I sent you a loaner BSC would that help you get motivated to build one?

I don't have a spare so I'd have to build it.

What pre and power amps are you using?

Did you leave the tweeter switch in your NLAs?

I've been using large Advents since 1976, and have three pairs; my daughter uses one pair in her system, the other two are stacked in my listening room.

I built the BSC about ten days ago and have been putting it through it's paces since then.

And I am mightily impressed! The best way I can describe the change is that it removes a layer of brightness from the upper mids and lets you hear all the music that was behind it.

Bass was never a problem before the BSC, but upper-mid shrillness was. No way should Roy Orbison's voice sound harsh, but it did before I started using the BSC.

Now, the old Advents are smoooth and powerful. The soundstage is wide and deep, and it's easy to place the instruments and vocalists within it.

Before BSC, any time I upgraded or changed something I'd have to do the evaluation on the headphones. After BSC, I can clearly hear what each change does using the speakers.

Don't hesitate. You're in for a real treat.
