Pete B Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 There seem to be 3 sources for newly manufactured Large Advent Woofer replacements. I'm wondering if anyone has tried these and what they thought of the performance/sound.AB-Tech, $84.50 this looks like it is the closest to the original, but don't know the motor type without a view of the back: http://www.abtechservices.com/adventspeakers.htmlhttp://www.abtechservices.com/images/lgadventwoofer.jpgLayne Audio, "improved" $80 with adapter plate, made in the USA claimed to be better than original, lower moving mass claimed which will raise Fc, it is clearly a somewhat different woofer: http://layneaudio.hypermart.net/Advent.htmHere is a post by the owner where he mentions this "improved" woofer: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/dc/dcbo...ing_type=searchLayne Audio, factory repro $85 made in China: http://layneaudio.hypermart.net/Advent.htmSimply Speakers, $129, claimed to be "New Factory Advent" part however the picture does not look like anything I've seen from the factory, can anyone confirm this: http://simplyspeakers.com/12diaphragms.htmLooks like a Jensen style motor: http://simplyspeakers.com/graphics_product...er-12100402.jpgThere are several choices here and I'm just curious as to which is the best.I'd be willing to measure each one for T&S parameters and in system Fc, Qtc for any supplier willing to provide samples. Three of each type would be best, measure all of them, listen to a pair, and disect one of each to determine materials used in construction, and motor geometry.
Carlspeak Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 Back on my soap box again Pete:It seems to me T/S parameters on these 3rd party drivers are a state secret. As much as I complain on this site about it, none have been forthcoming - especially AB Tech who claims to be AR experts who once worked there. I believe they order direct from SE Asia the wide variety of classic speaker drivers they offer. I would hope specs are discussed at some point during the ordering process and if so, then they must exist.Lame, I mean Layne audio has been inabstentia for some time now.No one seems to be able to contact them. Have you succeeded? The Simply Speakers woofer looks pretty cheesey. It's all about the musicCarlCarl's Custom Loudspeakers
Pete B Posted June 20, 2007 Author Report Posted June 20, 2007 Hi Carl, I've noticed for some time that many in the restoration business do not measure or provide T&S parameters, most refoamers do not for example. No I do not plan to call Layne given all the comments about how they do not respond. I will talk to them for sure if they want to provide some samples for evaluation.I did call AB Tech today, got right through to a very polite fellow who says he worked for AR and Jensen. He says that their 10" Advent woofer replacement was in the early days left over stock from Jensen, and that now they have the same company that makes most of their other drivers make the Jensen copy. He told me a bit about their quantities, that I won't repeat here, and every indication seems to be that they will continue to offer this driver for as long as it sells. He said that it is the round magnet version, and he didn't state the top/back plate thickness but I would expect it to be .25" which is thinner than the original and New Advent woofers. It is possible that other motor parameters have been adjusted to provide similar performance but we cannot be sure until a Jensen type woofer is dissected for analysis.I should probably also dissect a New Advent woofer, if anyone wants to provide a dead one, since I'm assuming that they kept the voice coil the same - not absolutely sure.I have to say it was a pleasure speaking to AB Tech, answered all my questions, no pressure to purchase, very nice to deal with.
Carlspeak Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 Hi Peter. So, did you discuss T/S specs with AB Tech? Do they have them? or, do they simply provide a benchmark driver to their builder for them to copy?Suspect they have to order reasonable quantities to even be able to place an order with a manufacturer. It's all about the musicCarlCarl's Custom Loudspeakers
Pete B Posted June 20, 2007 Author Report Posted June 20, 2007 Hi Carl,I didn't ask as I believe that their view is that the drivers are correct by construction.
