Guest Eunomians
I finally got around to finishing up my second pair of AR4x speakers.I sold my first pair to a good friend who had been begging me to sell them to him for quite some time. Basically a week later after not having them around anymore, I started to really miss them. So, I plopped down some money and scooped up another pair.In the meantime, I had managed to find some small speaker stands that I sanded and stained the same color as the AR4x. Once I got the AR4x's, I immediately changed the grill cloths to the same material I had used for my AR3a's a while back. Real easy stuff, took me 1/2 an hour to do the deed. Then I refinished the cabinets with the usual Tung oil and #0000 Steel Wool treatments over the course of several days (the more coats, the merrier). Now they are finished, and looking like they're in mint condition. Woofers are cloth surrounds and the tweeters are back-wired.Pots are perfect, zero cut-out and zero scratchiness. They're real easy to turn as well. The best part though, aside from how they sound, is the matching pair of stands. These AR4x's really look like my AR3a's had little babies! They look so cute perched on top of their baby stands, too!I tried my best to take pics that show the scale difference between the AR3a & AR4x. Hopefully you'll get the idea pretty clearly.---NEXT PROJECT--- AR7 restoration. I will re-veneer the 7's with real walnut veneer. I will refoam the woofers, too. Guest stevevdb
You did a very good job.The speakers seem nem but is the cover ok? The tissue used seems very tight. When my AR4x speakers were in need of some new cover tissue I did go for the one with some more gaps in the tissue. Guest Eunomians
They sound great! The material is 'acoustically transparent'. It does not look like it is, but it is.I know there is renewed debate about acoustically correct grill cloth material. 'Tis best to read carefully the excellent post regarding grill cloths... Carlspeak
Great restoration job. I cringed a bit at the picture of the cat approaching a speaker. I hope you have some leftover cloth. Most cats view grill cloth as a scratching post! I hope yours doesn't.Remember, it's all about the musicCarlCarl's Custom Loudspeakers
