I have a pair of ar-7 speakers is fair/good condiation.

The woofers are no good, cone was eaten by mold or something.

Any thoughts on possible replacement woofers. Would a generic 8" woofer be ok? no classic value, but at least usable?

thanks for thoughts,

Jeff

Hi Jeff;

Do you mean the surround ring is rotten?

If this is what you mean, then, re-foam kits are readily available.

This can be done by almost anyone with patience.

It is not for everyone to do a re-foaming of a woofer, but there is lot's of tips on this site alone to assist you.

My first one took about 1 1/2 hours and the second one took about 10 minutes.

Shops may charge you $35.00+/- each, depending whether you carry the bare woofers in, or in the enclosures still.

Good luck.

Hi Jeff;

If the holes are few and far between and really small, perhaps just a real tiny dab of rubber glue on these holes might just get you by.

This certainly isn't a technicians permanment solution, nor would it be mine, at least long term.

It just may work for you, and you and I would not probably even hear a difference.

This idea would only be an effort to keep them and not spend more time and money.

It does maybe give you an option though.

I would suspect that with that much damage by water, the enclosure would swell as well, being particle board with vinyl cover.

I won't be here to see your response, so, I will guess that a re-cone kit would be too costly, perhaps.

A used pair of woofers off ebay may be another option.

There again, the price of the ebay AR-7 woofers, rare, plus s&h may make a re-cone kit a practical alternative.

I don't know the price of re-cone kits.

There is other more knowledgeble members that will comment and perhaps be a little more helpful to you.

Is a few photos possible, Jeff?

hi Vern,

thanks for the suggestion. I put a little duro glue on the cone and pushed from the backside the spot were it was ripped. just about 1/4" inch long. I guess the spots on the cone are mold. I wipe with a little bleah.

I put on the new foam surrounds...twice. Had to recenter them both.

well know I know what the shirms were for ;-). I hated to cut out the dust cap. The ar-7 woofer cap was flat and thick. I made new ones from 3 layers of black card stock. used the surround glue to re cemt in place. looks good. I left the np elero cap in place, did not see a need to upgrade to PP or something. new pink fiberglass and

all is well.

The Ar-7 sound great, very nice sounding bookcase size speaker. relaxed...not to bright and very nice tight base. they play well with the ar-2ax speakers also. My ar-2ax need some help in the hig end...aybe the pots are still not clean...another project.

the AR speakers are easy to listen too...not big brain speakers, but nice and enjoyable.

best to all,,

Jeff
