AR-5 Repair

I have a pair of AR-5 speakers. To help in dating them, the serial number on one is 30533.

The woofers in both boxes need new suspensions. I just finished learning how to do this on a pair of AR-18's. The task does not seem daunting.

Unfortunately, one of the tweeters is blown.

Was the entire production run of AR-5's made with one style of tweeter, or do I need to be very specific if I attempt to swap in a new one?

I don't want to redo the suspensions unless I know I can replace the tweeter.

Thanks for any insights.

Hi there;

There was only one size of 3/4" 8 ohm tweeter for the AR-5 speaker system.

This is the same tweeter as used in the AR-LST ll and later AR-2AX.

You must use caution when looking for a used replacement tweeter, as these are less plentiful than the 4 ohm 3/4" tweeer used in the AR-3A and AR-LST.

Over the years there was a re-designing of the tweeter.

Front wired, rear wired, enclosed magnet, with sound absorbent foam on the front plate and perhaps even Ferro-fluid.

Please wait for other more knowledgeable members to come along and help you.

Good luck.

I had a set of these in the 70's, they are the best speaker I ever owned. I am actually thinking of getting another set. Like you the Surrounds need to be done, it doesn't seem like a hard thing to do, where do you get the materials?

Be really careful when replacing the tweeter, I did it, don't remember how I found it or what it was, but sounded perfectly horrible. I wouldn't use anything but a 100% replacement part.

I am new here so I am not sure how this is going to work. But I have a picture of the speaker and maybe someone could make a comment on the surround, I am new to this surround stuff, although it doesn't seem difficult if you take your time. Here goes.

Thanks
