Question on the tone controls on AR2a

Hello all, sorry for the very basic question, but I just want make sure I am clear on this.  I have a pair of 2a's that have been upgraded to 2ax and L-pads were put in place of the original potentiometers.  When the mid and hi controls are turned up or down am I simply making the midrange driver or tweeter louder or quieter or am I adjusting the frequencies that pass through those drivers?

I am a passionate and collector of Acoustic Research, but from a technical point of view I have no capacity to give you an answer.
But some advice on the later mids, those used on AR2ax, I feel like giving it to you and it will help other more capable forumers to give you some help on the mid and high problem (if the L-pads have both been changed): first disassemble and desolder your mids and measure them with an ohm meter - there are various versions of these averages with coils and very different values of their resistance, however it is important that the measurement both have different values of a few decimals of ohms, thanks to these measures the aids will be more correct to allow you to make your pair of AR2a upgraded to AR2ax sound beautiful

I thought you would have had an answer by now.  All of the frequency filtering occurs before the lpads.  You are changing the loudness of the individual drivers in the range of the frequencies that are passed to each driver through the crossover network. 

Your lpads are probably 8 ohm and the original potentiometers were close to 16ohm. If your lpads do not have  25 ohm parallel resistors on the lpads you are hearing balance adjustments that were not part of the original design.

Someone else may be able to shed more light.

Edit:  They resistors don't have to be on the lpads.   They can be anywhere as long as they are parallel in the circuit.
