AR-17 Tweeter

Hi,

I am new member and it is my first post to this forum.

I have a pair of AR-48s loudspeakers (refoam the bass and midrange speakers) and they play great (see the attachment).

Refoaming the midrangrs was a hard expirience, bacause it's a problem to find 4,5" foam ring here, so have to use 4" ring, but it O.K. now.

As a part of my "vintage" system, they are connected to Marantz 1090 amp (1978) rated as 2X45W RMS, which seems to be a little bit underpowered amp for these speakers. That’s why I get a pair of AR-17 (1977/78) which (I think) will be more suitable for "1090". But I found them without tweeters. I refoam the bass speakers and now I am looking for tweeters (identical with AR-18 tweeters). Has anybody picture of those tweeters to send me, how I will be able to recognize them on some "market".

Regards,

mircen

Hello mircen:

Many of these tweeters look similar from the front-- a small dome (called either 1-1/2 or 1-1/4 in) in the center of a 3-1/2" flange. When looking on eBay or elsewhere, it is best to ask for a photo of the reverse side, and examine the AR part number.

Quoting from Jan. 1, 1979 Teledyne-Acoustic Research price list:

AR Part # 1200014-3, 1-1/2-in pressure highrange, 3 oz. magnet (AR-7x, AR-17, AR-18).

Quoting from the Nov. 1, 1986 price list:

AR Part # 1200014-3 1-1/4" highrange (AR-7, AR-7x, AR-18, AR-25)

Be careful; in 1979, AR used a #1200005-0 for the AR-7!

best stick with part number, and not the seller's description of what speaker the driver will fit!!!!

happy hunting!

Sorry, I mis-copied the 1986 price list entry; it actually says:

AR Part # 1200014-3 1-1/4" highrange (AR-7, AR-7x, AR-17, AR-18, AR-25)

Please mind the details--For example the AR-18, -18b, -18s, -18bx, -18bxi didn't all use the same highrange driver. One might see an inaccurate eBay advertisement that states the tweeters for sale are from an AR-18 (same as used in AR-17), when in fact the items for sale might have been from an -s, -b, or other newer version of the 18.

Best to ask for a picture of driver backside showing AR# 1200014-3.
