Greetings, I just had the good fortune to pick up a pair of AR-2ax speakers at an estate sale. I’m looking to have them refurbished. Can someone out there recommend an honest & competent repair person to take my speakers to in the Chicago area? Also can I get some information on when they were made? I understand AR-2ax were manufactured between 1967 and 1976. The serial numbers are:AX108255 & AX108904. Also each speaker ahas a small metal "a" on the front attached to the cloth. What's that all about? Thanks, Ed

Sounds like these are AR2a's, not ax's. The 2a's have two midrange cone drivers each at about 3" diameter and a single dome tweeter like the AR3. I have a pair of these and they sound very good--similar to AR3's, but with slightly less low end.

Why don't you look at the drivers and listen to each to determine if they are all working? A dealer or repair shop will charge more than these are worth to refurbish them. You can likely do better yourself. If the woofers have cloth surrounds instead of foam, they are probably OK. The midrange cone speakers are the most likely to be bad from age. If so, and you can't find replacements on ebay or elsewhere, consider making a filler plate out of wood and putting a good 8 ohm driver in place of the two mids.

Let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for your response. I guarantee I'll do more harm than good to the speakers if I attempt to repair. I really need to have them worked on by someone else.

I don't know whether the surrounds are cloth or foam because I won't even attempt to take the fronts off.

I say they are AR-2ax because that is what the paperwork on in back states. Could that paperwork be incorrect? Ed
