Years ago, somebody did a REAL nice mod. To a pair of original Eights, with the newer protective screened mids and tweeters.

Where have you ever seen a pair of screen protected midrange Allison drivers for the Allison, not AR line of speakers? I'd love to get a hold of a pair, or two, or perhaps three.

I see these on Ebay, but I don't know if they are for the Allison line, or CD line.

EDIT: These are for "Autosound Installation".

I see the Allison screen protected midrange drivers every day!

Eight of them are currently in service in my Allisons plus 4 spares in stock.

Of course, the final procedure depends on what driver he ends up  with. The reason I would advise against that is the fragile nature of the wiring of these old Allison tweeters. Drilling the two small holes in the boss cutout “upgrades” the cab. To the way all the newer ones are without risking damage to the tweeter.

Sadly, I no longer have my Fours but if you are replacing a front-wired tweeter with a back-wired one it seems to me the best solution is to keep it back-wired and make the connection inside the cabinet. I did that on a single Four I acquired (and later sold because the up-firing woofer did not work well with my high ceiling). Just be sure to plug and seal any holes. I removed the spring terminals and installed some brass machine screws/washers/nuts. Botttom one in the photo has been painted black to blend in.

That SB tweeter is new to me but could work. I also remember a member of the Yahoo group recommending the Audax TW025A2.

Some discussion here: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?/topic/3033-replacement-tweeters-for-allison/

Good luck with the restoration. They are wonderful speakers (when properly placed).

The last time I did this, I simply added the holes for the two driver leads and the spring loaded pins remained.
