  1. Yes, I should have said "set up", not "dried". Anyhow, the 17's sound much better post woofer surround sealant. Lower bass, more punchy. They sound fantastic. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't tried it. Stephen
  2. Thanks JKent. I replaced the bad caps on one of my 22A's because one tweeter wasn't functioning at all. Maybe I should've replaced all the caps at that time for the pair. I picked up the 17's this week and all drivers are functioning, though I suspect that no capacitor replacement has ever taken place. The previous owner didn't understand that the badge was screwed into the cabinet baffle and had broken both grills in an attempt to remove them, so I bought OG grill replacements from ebay. I'll test the woofer response tomorrow after Roy's dope dries. You guys have great advice for a novice KLH'er! Stephen
  3. Roy, I had already applied the first coat of the sealant based on a prior comment by others earlier this afternoon. They didn't appear to have had an application of an inferior stiffening material. So, if recapping doesn't have a bearing on woofer performance, is tweeter performance improved? Thanks, Stephen
  4. I just bought a pair of 17's this week. The cabinets are mint condition. The drivers are all intact, functioning and appear to be in excellent condition. They sound great, though a bit lighter in bass than I was expecting. My 22A's seem to have more bass extension and punch, although their woofer surrounds have already been resealed with Roy C's sealant. My question's are: 1) Should I replace the capacitors even though there is no evident need to at this point? 2) Should I go ahead and reseal the cloth woofer surrounds now or wait until I replace the capacitors or does it really matter the sequence? Thanks!
  5. RoyC, I see on other forum pages that you are the supplier of the proper surround dope. Do you have any made up and available for purchase? Thanks, Stephen
  6. They non-functioning tweeter was caused by two blown capacitors, so they were replaced and the speakers sound great! Can anyone tell me how to know when the woofer surrounds need re-doping?
  7. Both speakers have the same woofer gasket material (not foam ) but one is light beige color and one is nearly black. I hooked them up last night for a listen, and unfortunately one tweeter has no output at all, so I'm dropping them off at my local speaker tech to test them and figure it out. No surprise that 50+ year old speakers would need service! At least the cabinets, grilles etc. are in excellent condition.
  8. This is weird. I just bought a set of KLH 22A today. At least that's what I thought! The black metal plates at the speaker terminals both say Model 22A but the "A" on both do look like they were post added at the factory. The paper serial number sticker on one says M-Twenty Two A 034098. The paper serial number sticker on the other one says Model 22A SPKR A 041496. The differences in tweeter mounting (one is mounted on white cardboard, the other is on black plastic) and the woofer surround colorations mimic exactly what Robthomp posted several years ago. The only difference between his experience and mine is that both of my pair have the odd looking stencil "A" on the metal plates and his only had it on one speaker. Is this common? I'm new to the forum. I had a pair of KLH bookshelf speakers back in the mid seventies (not sure what model) and bought the 22A's on a whim, as I'm getting back into vintage gear. I haven't even had a chance to listen to them yet.
