  1. Very good Gents! I'll give it a go and I thank you both!!
  2. So, I've installed new pots on my AR2s, cleaned everything up inside and out, placed the yellow insulation back inside, hooked my woofers up and tested the sound...all is well. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for applying the grey woofer sealant that I just got, in order to seal it all up nice and tight? I looks fairly straight-forward but I want to make sure I get it right. Thanks!
  3. I've followed some threads here around gluing speaker cones to their surrounds, but my surrounds have come loose in a couple of spots from the metal basket. I've seen Aleene's glue mentioned in some of those posts but wonder if that type of glue will be sufficient to secure the surrounds to metal or if there are other suggestions??? Thanks!
  4. I was fortunate to successfully remove both grilles from my early AR2's ( 20+ staples AND 6 globs of glue on each cabinet) without inflicting much damage to either of the grilles or the grille cloth, but since I'm restoring these speakers as close to original as possible, it sure would be nice to have some fresh OEM grille cloth. I understand from the Forum plus a web search, that there is little to none of the grille cloth available now that's a close match. I am new to this admittedly, but it looks to me like this grille cloth pattern and other early AR grille cloths like it are pretty simple weaves that could be fairly closely replicated with the right threads and proper looming technique. So, my question is...Do y'all feel there is enough demand for early AR grille cloth to warrant producing or finding a producer for it?
  5. The quality of AR speakers is rivaled ONLY by the quality of the individuals I've encountered on this site!!! There ARE still good people in the world!!! Thanks dxho!
  6. Are these pots ceramic inside the metal covers, which I could take off and clean?
  7. Nice article and helpful thanks! Serial numbers on the cabinets are B46868 and B46871. and they DO have the two digit Thorndike St zip code of 41
  8. I'll work on pics, but the box has the word "Pyramid" and "2X2" on the side. There's some old tape around the box which I'm afraid to remove. The serial # is probably under there
  9. I understand!!! I apologize for having you on both of my AR2 threads....I'm new to this forum!! I do have the "Restoring the AR3a" pages, and I'm using them as a resource as well. I'm so appreciative of this page and for everyone being so helpful here! These AR2 were my step-father's who has recently passed away and I fondly remember sitting in our den with him when I was young listening to these. I want to bring them back as they were then as best I can and could not even conceive of doing it without y'alls help here. Thank you!!!
  10. No. Little to no variation as I move the knob from mids to woofer. It looks like from a rely from dxho that I have original AR2 pots, and I was expecting those oil-filled capacitor boxes. So what are these silver things and can they be reliably used as an indicator of the date of these AR2s? Thanks!
  11. Exactly!!! What is that and should I consider replacing that too?
  12. Thank you dxho! Would you (or anyone else) have a recommendation as to what to replace them with if I'm trying to get as close as possible to their original sound?
  13. …...you probably have oil filled capacitors that are still good..... I was expecting oil filled caps too, but instead I found a metal box mounted up on its side with six soldered connections, and not oil filled box as I've seen in many of the pictures here. What's up with that? I cannot find any date stamp anywhere inside either.
  14. Yes! Are these what are called "L" pads maybe??
  15. So I finally got the cloth surround woofers out of my AR2s this morning and was expecting to find corroded ceramic pots, but instead I found what appear to me to be more modern aluminum cased pots. I'm getting little to no sound from my two cross-firing mids and absolutely no variance in sound when I adjust the knob, so I figured I'd just go in and clean up the ceramic pots I was expecting to find. So now what? I guess just replace these?
  16. Finally success!!! The "L" pick was essential for this and the heat was the kicker!! Thanks you guys so much for the help!! The cloth surround woofer looks to be in great shape, but I'll still seal it with the solution from Vintage-AR. I need to get to those pots and see what kind of shape they're in. I'm getting very little sound from the two cross-firing mids. From what I'm reading it's corroded pots.
  17. Thanks for the tip Adventagious. Grille covers are off-those AR guys must have been paid on a "per-staple-used" basis! And then the dabs of glue...jeez!! Thanks for the links-I'll take another run at it armed with these.
  18. Hey folks! I've poured over the forum here as well as page 8 in the "Restoring the AR-3a" guide for help getting the woofers out of my AR-2s, I've tried everything but so far, I've had no success. The clearance is really tight between the frame and the woofer and the paint-can tool just won't fit. Now, maybe I'm being a bit too gentle, but these woofers are in great shape and certainly don't want to risk damaging them trying to remove them. From all I've read here, and the troubleshooting steps I've followed, it sounds like my pots need to be cleaned or replaced which is why I need to get the woofers out. Does anyone have any suggestions other than patience and perseverance??? Thanks!!
  19. Thanks JKent! The grilles seem brittle too. Because they're so old I guess. I'm thinking these 2s are late 50's -ear;u 60's. I see jazz listed in your interests. I'm a jazz fan myself...can't wait to listen to some Bill Evans trio through my AR2s once they're squared away. That should be a treat!!
  20. Staples!!!! Many staples as you show above IARybody, in random places AND glue or some type of adhesive as well. Thank goodness only one of the speakers needs looking into!! The staples came out easy enough, but doing so without damaging the speaker cloth is a bear!! I still have the bottom right corner to go, but I'm taking my time, so as not to damage cloth or grille. More to come, and se anyone is interested I'll include pictures.
  21. Thanks everyone for the help. I listened for countless to these ARs in our den as my step father Earle worked and smoked his pipe occasionally. He introduced this poor, WV kid to opera and other and great forms of music and I want to honor his memory by giving these classics the treatment they deserve. I'm sure Ill be back for more help as I work toward that end. I'm so grateful to him for this gift...( he obviously knew I was listening!!) and to y'all for this fantastic resource!! Thanks!
  22. I inherited a pair of AR2s from my step-father that are in great shape. After spending some time in this forum understand that I need take great care when removing the grilles, if its necessary. If it does come to that, I'm wondering if AR2 grilles are stapled or glued or both? Thanks for all of your great insight and help!!
