AR-2ax: Early Midrange
Jim Pearce replied to ReliaBill Engineer's topic in Mods, Tweaks, and Upgrades to the Classics
I need to get those Heil ESS tweeters off of my pair of 2ax speakers and get those rebuilt 3/4 inch black domes in there. Engineer Bill... What is your opinion of the Polk RT16?- 53 replies

I've asked this in several different ways because apparently some of you have a problem understanding what I'm trying to find out based on how I've worded it.

Can anyone tell me what capacitors those serial numbers contain and do they need to be replaced? I've heard that some of these capacitors do not need to be replaced and you can tell which ones if you know the serial number. I have read somewhere that there is a database indicating year manufacture and type of capacitor based on serial number. It is my understanding that certain types of capacitors never need replacement.

And yes, The equalizers are included.

I think someone at one point posted a link or a chart that indicated the type of capacitor that is in this loudspeaker based on the serial number from which one could tell year manufacture. It seems like I read somewhere that some of these capacitors do not need to be changed because they last indefinitely but that depends on the serial number and when they were made. Comments?

There's a pair of sixes available locally that are in pretty decent shape for 200, early versions apparently with the surface mounted toggle switch and posts on the back. Also, 12s for $250 possibly. Comments?

Anybody got a spare pair of empty 3a cabinets?
Jim Pearce replied to genek's topic in For sale / Wanted
I have some as well as all the drivers. Cloth surrounds on the woofers and the red dome tweeters. Also have woofers that need to be refunded, nothing is assembled. -
Comparing OEM and HiVi tweeters in restored pairs of AR2ax speakers
Jim Pearce replied to Vern48's topic in Acoustic Research
I would be interested in hearing everyone's take on the black tweeters that have been rebuilt. Also, I would like to put a fuse in the circuit ahead of the tweeter...between the crossover and the tweeter. Any recommendations as to amperage? I guess I should have placed this comment right after the original post, sorry. -
We all know by now that speaker placement is critical in terms of accurate sound reproduction. I'm going to start experimenting with angles and heights. I'm sure there's a body of knowledge somewhere out there that comes from the designers of specific loudspeakers. Maybe somebody like Tom could share something about this.

I don't think so. They don't look anything like these at all.

Something like $400. And they are gone now. Apparently mine are authentic. I would like to sell them. I sold the tweeters for $300.
-
Mine are exactly those dimensions.

I have some Tempos that I would like to know how to identify. Where can I find online how to do that? From what I hear of the woofers and mid-ranges are pretty special but they need five cubic feet. I want to combine them in a larger box with woofers made by Watkins, dual voice coil paper and also use my ESS tweeters. What about a Karlsson cabinet?
-
Roy, I thought you stopped doing this and Chris is the only one doing it these days.
-
Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions for the originals to compare the ones that I have and see if they might be genuine?
-
I have some stands of the conventional type that appear to be AR. How can I tell if they are authentic? I saw some for sale on an auction site that were listed as being Acoustic Research; they were asking an insane amount of money!
-
I own them, I had the work done.
-
I have rebuilt tweeters.

Man, am I glad I saw this thread and I wholeheartedly second every word of it, thank you Roy.
