Hello, I've bought some time ago some AR-11 speakers, and the previous owner had them customized with some metallic grilles (picture attached to my message). My question is : can it affect the sound quality? I tinkered the grilles to be sure that there is no contact between the midranges and the metallic grilles ; but still, would it be better to buy some classic style Acoustic Research grilles? Thanks a lot.

Thank you newandold No, I'm not planning on to do so, I was just wondering if it's enough because I've read that all the Acoustic Research 12" woofers speakers are power hungry.

AR-3a midrange front-wired = AR-11 midrange?

OK, thanks a lot, AR55 and JKent! -
Hello, Does anyone know if the AR-3A front-wired configuration midrange is the same as the AR-11 midrange? I just put an AR-3A front-wired midrange inside my AR-11, it seems to work quite fine, but I was wondering if it is really equivalent. Thanks. Arthur

Hi everyone, I've both the AR-3a and the AR-11 speakers, and there is indeed a difference in the bass. The AR-3a bass is deeper, smoother and go lower, whereas the AR-11 bass is lighter and more subtle I would say, as you can hear a more discernable difference between bass notes. Listening to the AR-11, I discovered some new aspects of the bass notes of my favorite records, that there a difference between "high bass notes" and "low bass notes". It's like if the bass is singing. Sometimes I change my speakers from AR-3a to AR-11 (and vice versa), depending if I prefer to hear a deep and smooth bass or a "singing" bass.

Evolution of and Replacements for the AR 11/12" Woofer

Hi everyone, one my ar11 woofers is damaged, do you think I can connect an ar 3a woofer instead inside my ar 11 cabinet? (I have an ar 3a woofer in stock) Thanks a lot. Arthur -
Ok, thanks a lot ra.ra! I'm gonna check the restoration guide.

Ok, thanks a lot Aadams, I have already read on this forum that the bass are maybe smoother and a little bit deeper on ar-3a than on ar-11, that could explain the difference to my ears.

Thanks Aadams, the ar-3a are an early version I think, because the mid-range and twitters are front-wired, and the woofers are originals. My ar-11 are the Teledyne version. Do you think it isn't worth trying? I will supply some photos. Thank you again!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if it is a good idea to replace the ar-11 woofers by ar-3a woofers inside the ar-11 cabinets? It seems to me that the ar-3a woofers are a little bit more powerful than the ar-11 ones, the bass are deeper, I noticed when handling them that they are also heavier. Thanks a lot. Arthur
