NICE! Glad you got them singing again! The 3 is magical. I’ve been listening to mine with tube power and sooooo sweet sounding.

The ones from Tedss appear to be open so they would have to be enclosed. The ones from Alibaba are the ones I sold but there’s a 100 piece minimum order. Then there’s shipping from China. And import duty. The kits I put together, with crimps, washers and knobs cost me about $27/pair. I sold them here for $30/pair so you can see why I’m not eager to buy more.
L-pads work very well and they’re cheap.
KentI hear ya, and you did a great service for all of us who purchased them from you.

Another possible pot source.

These are the ones I’ve used, and others here as well with good results. Can’t find them now on fleabay. Use to be listed regularly.

This is also an option. https://www.fatquartershop.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=%2358+-135L
Yes, I bought fabric for a set of 3As I recently restored, and it’s a very nice option if you want the linen look.

Thanks Kent. If anyone has a set of 4 from Kent's supply not in use they'd consider selling, please let me know. Those looked pretty stout.
I may also look into some older pots from prior AR* repairs I have to see if I can cobble a set of 4 together; I have not yet gotten into the ones in the AR3's yet.
If not, will go the (new) L-pad route as a last resort.
What a gorgeous set of 3s! Those will clean up nicely! For the pots, contact baco99 (Brian) on Audiokarma. He also sells them.
I’ve also used the Mellotone and it a virtual perfect match to the original.Cheers!

They look great! I’m assuming by now they are back together and you’re enjoying the music!

1/4 inch thick MDF. It’s rigid, doesn’t warp. I used this for new frames on a set of my 3s.
-
Nice work! Unusual to have original owners of the 3 these days.
-
I had to make new grill frames for one of my set of 3s and used 1/4 MDF. My other set of 3s have 3a frames and used one for measurements. With the Melotone Saran material on the frame. It’s fits nice and snug. No Velcro needed.

Glen,
Id be happy to ship you a "3" pin gratis.
You, second only to RoyC, likely because we were working on similar projects then... You' excellent passive teachers. " As in you didn't know you were teaching me! Ha"
Send me your address and I'll put it in the mail Monday morning.
Hopefully you can help me out with a tidbit of info here and there in the future. Or not, gratis is gratis! Haha,
Be good Glen,
Scottie
Hi Scottie!
Roy had a spare he sent me, so it’s good! Truly appreciate your offer though.
Hold onto it, you may need it at some point.

♫♫ Saturday May 6th, 2023 Spring Blue Mt Lodge Audio fest. Peekskill, NY ♫♫……
sounds impressive but I can’t find any information regarding this…… I live 12 minutes away and would like to hear more about this. Is there a website?
No site. I organize the meet twice a year. You just come, bring a system to demo if you want, or just come to enjoy the other demo systems, maybe buy some vinyl or parts, and spend the day with fellow audio heads! It’s a lot of fun. Cheers, Glenn

Two weeks to go!

AKer Pete B did a very good waveguide presentation at the recent Frankenfest, and asked if I thought attendees of the Lodge meet would be interested. Anyone here planning to attend and would this be of interest?

I also follow you on AK, I've seen your "works" (perhaps saying "masterpieces" is better) I appreciate your passion, dexterity and attention to detail...the attached photos are very useful, helpful and very demonstrative for us enthusiasts.
My compliments on your wonderful restorations of our beloved Acoustic Research.Thank you Giorgio!
I love doing these restorations and documenting them for others to feel confident they can also do it, or at least see what is needed to bring them back to former glory!
Cheers, Glenn

Thanks so much for your thoughts and the videos. I had seen the video where you switched them back and forth. In that video the AR3 sounded better, more natural. Played the video on my laptop into a DAC and into my gear with AR90s. In these (new) videos the 3a sounded better; as you described.
Is the earlier 3a with the alnico woofer a better choice, or doesn't matter ?
It's personal, but I prefer the Alnico woofers sound and smoothness.
-
Nice to have this available!
I have a set of these and I’m always amazed at how dimensional they sound.
Good luck with your restoration!Cheers, Glenn

Prefer the Alnico woofer, seems a bit deeper to my ears, but others may say the opposite!
Once I replace the pots in the 3s, I’ll do another video. Curious to see the difference.

Hi David.
Here's two videos I made to compare the 3 vs. 3a.
Interestingly, when I recorded these, there was no distortion, which I think my phone is causing with the low end. The 3s sound much more reticent than in person compared to the 3as, which sound much clearer and forward in the mids and highS in the recordings. These are just for an idea not HiFi at all!

That's how I felt when I saved a pair of 9s that had water damage. Thanks to your tips they came out pretty decent.
Glenn, which do you prefer, the 3 or the 3a? I think you did a comparison video on YT. I found the 3s to be more natural.
Any sonic differences in the early 3a with the alnico woofer magnet vs the later ones?
Hi David.
Here's two videos I made to compare the 3 vs. 3a.
