Finally working on the AR-3. Pics and usual dumb questions.
GD70 replied to Reel Man's topic in Acoustic Research
NICE! Glad you got them singing again! The 3 is magical. I’ve been listening to mine with tube power and sooooo sweet sounding. -
I hear ya, and you did a great service for all of us who purchased them from you.

Another possible pot source. https://www.tedss.com/2022004125 These are the ones I’ve used, and others here as well with good results. Can’t find them now on fleabay. Use to be listed regularly. https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/potentiometer-RA40Y-25w_60775567103.html

Yes, I bought fabric for a set of 3As I recently restored, and it’s a very nice option if you want the linen look.
-
What a gorgeous set of 3s! Those will clean up nicely! For the pots, contact baco99 (Brian) on Audiokarma. He also sells them. I’ve also used the Mellotone and it a virtual perfect match to the original. Cheers!

They look great! I’m assuming by now they are back together and you’re enjoying the music! -
What is the recommended stock to use to fabricate new grill frames?
GD70 replied to Vern48's topic in Acoustic Research
1/4 inch thick MDF. It’s rigid, doesn’t warp. I used this for new frames on a set of my 3s. -
Nice work! Unusual to have original owners of the 3 these days.
-
I had to make new grill frames for one of my set of 3s and used 1/4 MDF. My other set of 3s have 3a frames and used one for measurements. With the Melotone Saran material on the frame. It’s fits nice and snug. No Velcro needed.

Hi Scottie! Roy had a spare he sent me, so it’s good! Truly appreciate your offer though. Hold onto it, you may need it at some point. Cheers, Glenn

Hope you can come! BTW, what’s your name?

No site. I organize the meet twice a year. You just come, bring a system to demo if you want, or just come to enjoy the other demo systems, maybe buy some vinyl or parts, and spend the day with fellow audio heads! It’s a lot of fun. Cheers, Glenn

AKer Pete B did a very good waveguide presentation at the recent Frankenfest, and asked if I thought attendees of the Lodge meet would be interested. Anyone here planning to attend and would this be of interest?
-
Thank you Giorgio! I love doing these restorations and documenting them for others to feel confident they can also do it, or at least see what is needed to bring them back to former glory! Cheers, Glenn

It's personal, but I prefer the Alnico woofers sound and smoothness.
-
Nice to have this available! I have a set of these and I’m always amazed at how dimensional they sound. Good luck with your restoration! Cheers, Glenn
-
Prefer the Alnico woofer, seems a bit deeper to my ears, but others may say the opposite! Once I replace the pots in the 3s, I’ll do another video. Curious to see the difference.

Interestingly, when I recorded these, there was no distortion, which I think my phone is causing with the low end. The 3s sound much more reticent than in person compared to the 3as, which sound much clearer and forward in the mids and highS in the recordings. These are just for an idea not HiFi at all!

Hi David. Here's two videos I made to compare the 3 vs. 3a. 3as. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wcxc_S7MJh0 3s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7eYxBI0o2E
