  1. Beautiful job! How do you like them horizontally? I've tried mine both ways, and I think I like them vertically just a bit more. Seems like a I get a little better bottom end. But it's negligible and I could easily live with them horizontally if I had to.
  2. Welcome back! Love the Berkshires. Grew up outside of Boston(Newton) and spent a lot of time over the years in various locales out there. I'm now in California but would love to get back to a visit and see some old friends. Yes internet radio is great. I listen regularly to shows in New York, the UK, SoCal(in in Nor. California), and others. I still prefer a McIntosh tuner for local radio(we have a lot of good stations out here) and the fidelity is quite a bit better with, IMO. But the ability to listen to all kinds of shows from all over the world is a very good thing. And I'm happily listening through 3a's also.
  3. Got it. Thanks. These are priced at $2200. They look nice and fairly unmolested, but like I said too much for my blood, and I'm happy enough with my 3a's and 2's at this point.
  4. Different seller. Mine is in NorCal, the Ebay is in SoCal. And mine is selling them for several hundred more. He claims that the speakers "this speakers plays but need to move the nubs back and forth to get them to play.I can don't know if all parts are originals.Thanks." I'm not going to buy them, but you don't see many 1's in these parts so they are intriguing. Any idea what the blue wire in the back would be for?
  5. These are for sale not far from me. Seller doesn't know much about them, or if everything is original. From the back it looks like something was done to them. Have no idea what the blue wire is all about. They look to be in excellent shape, and looks like the drivers are original. Would appreciate opinions who know more about these rare speakers then I do.
  6. Of course you're right in AR's backyard more or less so more likely you'll come across these classics easier then me in the Bay Area.
  7. You are indeed "Lucky". Congratulations!! This stuff never happens to me, but I love reading about others that it does. Sounds like you're all set to do these beauties up right. Can't wait to hear about the endeavor and see more pictures.
  8. Love it, but put those grilles back on. Not only do they look much better, but I believe the grilles play into the sonic signature of the speakers.
  9. Welcome, and wow!!! Amazing job restoring those gorgeous 3's. I'm drooling with envy! They look terrific, and you even have the perfect spot for them. Congratulations!!
  10. Very early in the run, probably 3 years in. If they sound good, don't worry about getting inside of them, which is a hideous job with the sealed variety that you have. Most likely have oil filled caps, and those are good until they aren't. So..enjoy! Great speakers. I have 2 pairs, all serials below 20K.
  11. I don't think they make a SAS anymore. The elliptical is fine. In fact, my understanding(I haven't heard it) is that Jico's N91E for $33 is as good as the $56 option. I believe the only difference is that the ED is nude. Shouldn't make any audio difference.
  12. There is no problem with Grado's on AR's, as long as the table is properly grounded. Over at Audiokarma, the foremost expert/engineer on AR restorations is Marc Morin, and Grado carts, especially with an 8MZ or 8MR stylus are highly recommended by him. I use one on my AR TX(early, 2 motor version of the XA) without any issues. They do need to be loaded down some to sound best. Well worth heading over there for additional input by him and others if you have not already done so(not to say the folks here, many of whom post over there as well, aren't equally as qualified). That said, I also use an M91ED with both an original stylus and Jico SAS. Both sound great, the Jico's are pretty much spot on replica's of the original. Can't go wrong. I don't like the 97XE. Found it bland.
  13. You certainly can ask your question here. Many of us own AR tables. You can also go here http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?forums/turntables.28/ Lots of knowledgeable folks, and at least one, Marc Morin, who is a true blue expert when it comes to AR turntables.
  14. Wow Wow Wow!! Those are beautiful. How I would love to hear them. I'm in awe of your skills. Congratulations!!!
  15. That is a setup I'd love to hear/try sometime. Now, back to Glenn!
  16. Wow! What a great setup! Do you run the amps in Ultra linear or triode? Do they have 4 ohm taps? Have you tried the 3a's horizontally? I prefer mine(3's on top, 3a's on bottom) that way.
  17. Would love to see a picture of your stacked 3a's. Are they vertical or horizontal? What do you drive them with?
  18. Wait until you stack them with the 3a's. The best is yet to come.
  19. Yup knew they were a floor speaker. I actually have been reducing speaker size in my smallish space after living with a pair of Cornwalls for a couple of years. Great speakers, but a little too much for my situation. That's one of the reasons I ultimately passed on the Lowboys. If I do go for another pair of speakers(and with the 3's, a pair of KLH Model Six's, and a pair of Wharfedale W60's, unlikely at the moment) it would probably be one of the AR models that were a little easier to drive then the 3's. I'm thinking a nice pair of 5's.
  20. Well that doesn't make my life easier I'll have to give this some serious thought Thanks.
  21. Hi have a shot at a nice pair of Lowboys locally that have been restored, recapped, etc. They look great, and I've read many great things about them. But my quandry is that I own a beautiful pair of restored AR3's which I adore. And my understanding is that the Lowboys need high current power like the 3's to sound their best. Don't really need another pair of speakers that will sound similar to the 3's, so I'm curious if anybody here has compared these two classics and can offer some thoughts.
