  1. Great, now I am off to look for some 91's. Thanks.
  2. Been responding on this over at AK. I would agree to a price with the seller first with a contingency that you get to pull them and test them real quick and that they don't test open. Easy to do on the spot. Could be something as simple as for some reason the crimp connections have come off. Seen it happen - the ADS 910's I purchased. If they test open, you can see at that point if he would take maybe $100 less. Those will coast probably at least $100 each or a member might be able to give you a good deal on a pair. I recently picked up spare mids and mid woofers for mine for $150 total. I asked over at AK too, but if you tell us the price we might be able to give you some more to go on in terms of how much to worry about in terms of financial risk here. And yeah, dont worry about the grille fabric. Did you take a close look at the woofers and the surrounds there? These are all old enough they likely need replacing. Same with the mid woofers on front.
  3. do tell once you get a feel for it.

Wow, yes, I would think something is up. Richard would know. Are the switches on the back at the posts in the correct position?
  5. Well those should work well. Cool.

    ADS L1590

So Tom, I am sure it was tough to do that. Congrats on the sale though. I am sure the new owner is really happy. What are you thinning your options down to if I am may ask?
  7. Been meaning to ask you, with doing so many applications - 9 on these - of the Watco, how much time you waiting between applications etc? Good thing with the Watco is the fact you dont have to wait an entire 24 hours between applications like you do on other oils.
  8. Glenns going to make us a video of his work in action. Someone have an extra video camera he can use.

So no biamping? I am running my lone WOPL Phase Linear 400 and it seems like it's plenty in my 12x12 room.

Tom, what are you driving your 1590's with these days and how is it configured?
  11. Thanks Bill for the great responses. I went to Seattle from Boise to get mine. 7 hours one way. I was able to conduct some other business so it wasn't a one minded affair. The good thing is that the seller and I have become good friends and continue to share emails and texts on our various exploits in this arena as well as others. When I originally go them I mapped out what it would take to recap them and it did look a bit daunting. They sounded great as they were so I dropped the idea for now.
  12. Hey Bill! Good details and information there on some of the differentiating details on the Ones. I will have to look at mine to see where they fall in that regard. In terms of the price my response was driven by the fact they have been listed as long as they have been, but of course location has some impact. The Ones seem they would be a very difficult speaker to ship. Plus I was fortunate I guess and got mine for $400 with everything working. AT some point I will run through them with new caps and check all the drivers. I am also reading on occasion about the woofers being serviced.
  13. Looking good. Edges and corners look pretty good overall actually. Bottoms a bit rougher as usual. Your wiring diagram looks like mine!
  14. Ah yes, seeing the familiar rear labels from across the room and your heart starts racing, wondering what model AR it is and hoping it has a 3 in it. Like Christmas morning as a kid.
  15. So what does Bill charge for refurbishing the woofers? (as I listen to mine now)

    ADS L1590

Tom, Glenn. I am very lucky to have both the 910's and the 1590's. Both are incredible and will remain in my little collection until something uncontrollable makes me move them on. Each will be put back into the best condition possible over time. I would agree with you quicks description of the 1590 being more refined. I think that is as good a quality as I could come up with to describe why I listen to them more than the 910's. I do think the room they are in has some impact on it all with the 1590's doing better in my smallish area. I also need to finish reproducing the 910 stands before i can fully criticize them. The only challenges I see remaining with my efforts on the 1590's is those darn grilles. I can probably do up the grilles themselves well enough, it's the pegs that are the problem. I am missing about 2 on each speaker. I really like the originals but they are hard if not impossible to come by.

899, I think you are correct with some exceptions. It seems there are a few specific drivers that ADS had some production issues with and need to be changed out if they are still around. Glue issues mostly Cant recall which specific models those were found in but it was a few maybe. The ferrofluid in the drivers can also be about at the end of their life cycle but at least that can be addressed. Also, that darn crossover board arrangement on the 910's can cause some age related issues in regards to parts or pieces needed to be tightened back up, reflowed and cleaned since it is exposed and is exposed to a little more wear and tear. The rubber surrounds help.
  18. Give those some playing time before assessing if the woofers are putting out bass. Took a little time to "break" in mine too if I remember correctly.
  19. Rick for the surrounds. Maybe Tom at myaudioaddiction. I used Ricks test tone for centering the VC on these. Easy peazy. Or remove the dust cap and shim. Both are fine on this smaller woofer. Cleaning off the old surround stuff is annoying at best.

Tom, getting back to this as a follow-up. Thank you for all the very helpful information you have provided in this thread. Great stuff. Now that I am the very lucky owner of both the AR9 and L1590 speakers much of what you have provided is very applicable. As I read your comments and thoughts on each I have been nodding my head in agreement. Listening impression that both you and McCarty provided are similar to mine. Over the years my plan is to preserve each and enjoy them as much as possible. Both sound fantastic as I hear them now, but I of course have no idea how that compares to what they may have sounded like new. This is of course a challenge for many of us that have jumped into this fun hobby and it keeps of curious. Where do we stop and start with our efforts to restore these beauties to their fullest or former glory?! Do they need it? Some things man engineers are just run until they give out. Other things are better serviced along the way. What do we do here? I did send the 1590 mid and tweeters down to Richard So for the treatment and I will report all is great. As I had stated in my other thread and you copied above I felt they sounded pretty darn good as they were. Getting them back, they sound pretty darn good and I also know they are set in this regard for another good block of time. I also now have the 910's and will be sending those drivers to Ricard as well at some point. 710's will arrive on my doorstep on Sunday! I have not as of yet concerned myself with any of the crossover components. Their complexity is enough to make me pause at this point considering they sound so good. My guess is that replacement of the many caps would be quite expensive. When I do get the courage I hope to tap into the vast knowledge and experience on this board and maybe find some ways to go about things practically. Maybe even remove and measure them before assuming they need to be replaced. etc. Both still need the treatment on the exteriors and I have again paused as I want to take my time, reflect on things and do it right. Maybe even find a way to sexy up the otherwise brutish AR9's! (As it seems none of us feel they are lookers as they are)
  21. Here is my pair, or I should say my sons. New surrounds.
