  1. Yes, nice collection of 18s models ... on the set here one of the cabs had some heavy water damage hence the driver donor status. The cabs have an internal stamp showing they were made in Brooklyn. Roger
  2. Caps are Unicon 5mfd NPE on these that measure within 10%. I will replace with (4) of the old Madisound 10mfd surplus which will boost output a bit due to half ohm lower esr and zero voltage loss compared to the Unicons. If I don't like the sound I'll order some new NPEs. Interesting to note the "mechanical" xover specs in AR's literature for the AR-18s: I will go ahead and correct the AR-7 xover polarity to match all of AR's other speakers since I have a tendency to play speakers in multiple pairs. The next person who gets these can scratch their head if they sound out-of-phase with their other AR-7's. Roger
  3. Just curious if the Teledyne era AR-18/s was AR's biggest little speaker? I grabbed a pair of the "s" version today locally for the drivers -- the cabs are very marginal. Some fun old posts from the archives: I wonder if he had any issues with the AR-7 reverse phasing ... I'm not very impressed with the refoam job and it seems there are or have been some caveats from the past regarding 8" foams: Robert (ra.ra), any reservations about dropping these drivers into AR-7 cabs with the appropriate crossover components. It looks like a slight reduction in cabinet volume. Roger
  4. Well, I learned something about badges in this thread. Also, four 4x's did pass through town here a while back when I was shy on cash flow but they sold for considerably more and one set was the early version (less than 50K serial #). Nice photo of Kloss Roger
  5. Wow, wish those were in Mr Rogers neighborhood. I don't think I would get tired of them anytime soon but easily flipped for $300 or more if I did ... Roger
  6. It appears all the "S" series are a little bright. The 38s crossed over at 2KHz while the 4x crossed over at 1.2KHz. I'd be curious how they sound. Roger
  7. They do have that 1KHz hump if I remember correctly but I've enjoyed listening to them --- not sure the other 4x "Boat" speaker will get finished this year. Too many other projects. Not sure Julian ever said anything bad about an AR speaker Roger
  8. What could go wrong with a 10" 2-way with a single cap crossover
  9. Didn't they abandon musical accuracy with the 4x? ... which was one of their better sellers. And then came the AR-9 so if they didn't make this beast than the 9 would have been the 8 -- having a fail in there was a bit of an incentive. Roger
  10. Saw a nice set of AR-8's sell on the auction site recently for $80. The seller had to run them twice and drop the price. I think these qualify for the least popular of the Classic-period speakers -- I think the drivers would have sold for that alone. I have yet to mount the previously mentioned drivers (earlier post0 in the AR-5 cabinets although I have everything necessary to do the job except time ... Roger
  11. Tom, Would be interesting in hearing more about speaker voicing at some point. In the meantime here is something else to consider from the archives about possible sources of variations in the AR-3 and AR-3a besides age-related deterioration of the drivers: Thoughts on AR-3 Schematics Roger
  12. A lot confusion about how reduced SPL's affect perceived frequency response of speaker systems. I would love to go back in time to one of the "Live vs Recorded" demos. What was the venue and who were the players -- obviously not a full orchestra. I'm not normally a 12" woofer guy but since the 58s' have been in the house they have been playing exclusively with the ADS 12-inchers and usually at low levels. So the sound is fuller you might say but it can be overbearing also; however, I can see people getting addicted to that lower 1/3 octave regardless of the SPL's involved. Maybe straying a bit from the OP's question but I think EddieV voiced the AR-3 for normal listening levels while RoyA may have voiced the 3a's for higher SPL environments. Right or wrong, does it matter? If you like one over the other then that is your model -- enjoy. If I had a few extra grand I would explore all the possibilities. Roger
  13. Adriano, I think you nailed that one pretty well from what I know of the 3's. Roger
  14. Hi,

Are those your ADS L-980's up on ebay?

I got three pairs of AR3's recently and have monies out for them plus no room. Wifey was complaining so decided those would go. I like them a lot....but AR has ruined me...lol.

I know!..who would have thought?! One pair is almost done....cherry ones are next...and may keep those. Third one needs mids...but got a line on a pair...but won't see the seller till June.

  15. Post-Classic and pre-AR-9 period: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/library/acoustic_research/add_series_1975-1978/add_series_brochures/ Haven't heard anything bad about the 12's -- only praise. Since they are somewhat rare and needing rebuild quite a few have already made it to the landfill. Roger
  16. Nice job, Glenn, on those ADD versions of the 2ax. They don't show up very often. Roger
  17. Safe journeys, Roy, and God bless!
  18. Wouldn't you know, Kent beat me to these: And don't forget these screws: From Amazon reviews: "The AR570 was invented as a compact and tough package to monitor or reinforce sound in recording studios. It has exceptionally clear and linear acoustic performance. The thick cast aluminum housing is both rugged and dissipates heat from the internal amplifier quite well." http://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B00005LACB/ref=acr_dpproductdetail_text?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 Also from Amazon reviews a recommended (unshielded) driver replacement: Woofer Replacement recommendation for AR570 By W. Miller on November 3, 2014 -- If you are looking at this legendary discontinued speaker you've no doubt heard about it and you've read some of these reviews. Yes, it's all true. I've used these for ages, built like a tank. They even will work as a mini PA or for monitors in a pinch. In fact, I pushed mine a little too hard and was searching for a woofer replacement for quite a while.... After extensive research, (and believe me, I spent days on the internet) I found a perfect match. The PYLE PLG54 5-Inch 200 Watt Mid Bass Woofer. They sell them here at Amazon. They are rated at 4 ohms like the AR originals, and are long throw, as are the originals. It drops right in, all the holes line up, and if anything, they will give you an even tighter bass. There is nothing "rumbley" or muddy about these speakers as a replacement for the woofer in the AR 570's. In fact, I bought another to get the two "Powered Partners" on the same page. I still get very clear mid's and very tight bass. Just so you know, I'm not a "bass-head"... I listen mostly to acoustic music.... (current price $16.80 w/free ship). This appears to be the correct power cord: "flat end figure 8" style power cord plug. 19. If I had the option I'd try SS for the LF amp and tube for the HF amp -- that said, I haven't done it Roger
  20. It is hard to walk by an AR speaker at the thrift regardless of model. Picked up a single Powered Partner for under $3 the other day just to satisfy my curiosity but it will probably end up costing me ... You can't have one without the other http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/library/acoustic_research/special_sections/additional_ar_documents/ar_powered_partner_brochure/ar_powered_partner_brochure_2.html Roger
  21. Wow, some more history ... some lovely oriental antiques ... and lots of antique test equipment Sharp eye on that AK-1, Tom. Roger
  22. The AR-8 drivers came in today. The woofers have 200004-1 part numbers and early '75 date codes. TomT describes them here: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=8033&p=98856 "By 1974, AR began using the "universal" woofer in the AR-8." This doesn't jive with the date code on these woofers. Robert tracked down a drawing for this woofer in the archive: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=7207&p=92994 The tweeters look like standard 1-1/4" rear wired drivers used in other models with early 1975 (561 7504) date codes. Robert's referenced drawing shows the 200005 tweeter was used in the AR-8 and according to the library literature number 200005-0 was used on the AR-6, 7, 8 and 4xa models. http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=6066&p=85737 Not sure why TomT thinks the AR-8 tweeter had silicone on the vc. I'll try the woofers in one of my AR-5 sets that are slated to get HiVi tweeter replacements and use the AR-8 tweeters to replace rear wired 4xa and 6 model tweeters that I had previously bridged breaks on the vc leads. I only have two cabs that use the rear-wired version of this tweeter. Another organ transplant from the AR diaspora where classics refuse to die ... Roger
  23. Looks like the TSW-310b was the last of the 10" 2-ways. They managed to get the sensitivity up to 90db according to the history spec sheet: http://www.aphenos.net/electronics/speakers/klh/all_ar.htm We'll see if the AR-8 drivers actually were different soon as I took the parted out drivers off the auction site. I suspect they will drop into my other speakers without any complaints or maybe I'll get creative Roger
