  1. That's the one ... rare birds I guess. I became curious when I saw one parted out on the auction site. There is another set for local pick-up only but too long a drive for me. So why no 2-way with 10" woofer by AR? Would like to hear these some day. Maybe I'll have to make my own set Roger
  2. Can't seem to locate the AR-8 crossover diagram anywhere except to find it used a 10mfd cap according to the old pricelists. Anyone? Roger
  3. I've been listening to the orphan 338 paired with the Elwyn 4x -- interesting combo. I'd have to say AR didn't make an 8" inch 3-way because they knew their market and the 4x just sounded too good in the same size box. The ST series was designed for that market anyway. The 338 has an edge on the high end but I would probably prefer the 4x voicing overall -- not bad for a 49-year old speaker that has been through hell and high water and was designed without the aid of computers. I don't have any experience with AR's 8" offerings between these two models, so ... Roger
  4. I've never seen a pair either but I do have one, left side speaker, since they were mirrored. Didn't get around to hooking it up yet but perhaps tomorrow. Today I got my old SAE back online and am chilling with a glass of wine and listening to some smooth jazz on the AR-5's. These two go together like peaches and cream Roger
  5. I guess the price scared everyone off that one plus the OP was about 8" designs It was a rather unusual looking speaker: http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/1293nht/index.html#R7PuUgodC8hOOxcV.97
  6. Need to learn how to restore the old tweeters first ... I did grab the orphan 338 on the auction site just to see how well it was done. I'll pair it with the Elwyn 4x just for kicks. Probably not too many 338 drivers around either.
  7. Don't give me any ideas ... I guess the KK era 338 wasn't quite the match for those who appreciated the voicing and dispersion characteristics of the classic period speakers. I've read at least one reviewer who was amazed that they could have made the classic era speakers without the benefit of computer modeling software ... ha, ha, ha ... Roger
  8. I'll let you know how three pairs of 5's and three pairs of 6's sound sometime later this year. Roger
  9. I'm sure others will be interested in this in the future as more cabs and less drivers are available. Maybe a repost in the AR section for reference value is in order.
  10. Using external measurements I get a volume of 1.56 cu. ft. subtracting 0.75 inch for sides for the AR-5 cabinet. Oops, maybe not, just found a reference which says 1.35 cu ft. for the AR-5. Nice reference for info I'm sure not a lot of people are up on. It shows one reason why JBL Century 100's were so popular. Roger
  11. Nice job, Carl. Is the volume on the OLA cab similar to the AR-5/AR-14 cab? Roger
  12. Steve, I would be guessing more efficient translated into less heat generated at the same SPL -- not too many variables there, dome, suspension, coil and magnet -- ferrofluid also if it is present. Still interested in the compliance of the butyl rubber surrounds here. The ADS L-980's rubber is pretty compliant but maybe the AR design called for a longer throw. I doubt anyone is interested in testing the differences at this point beyond a simple A/B comparison. I seem to remember you had some issues with the baffle arrangement on these. Roger
