  1. Yes, I’ve been there before with that, and there are a number of “creative solutions“ to secure a stripped terminal screw… Curious to know which one you used
  2. I’m not a Facebook subscriber, but one day I was looking for pictures of Allison‘s and realized the bulk of them were coming from Facebook. With a little bit of looking, I was able to see a lot of the pictures there and there are many without actually logging on or creating an account….. and yes, you’re right about Yahoo, and then another spin off was established at a place that I can’t recall which was the latest. The guys who know the most about things like the ESW were there, which is why I brought it up. you’re right about Yahoo, and then another spin off was established at a place that I can’t recall which was the latest. The guys who know the most about things like the ESW were there, which is why I brought it up. IMHO THE ESW Was a novel approach decades ago, but in the 21st-century with a limitless option of available subwoofers I feel that’s a superior approach over making these very very old loudspeakers work even harder. After restoring my own Allisons I’m very content to let them rest easy and have the subwoofer do the work.
  3. Big following for Allison acoustics overseas back in the glory days (Italy especially). when you’re on eBay, the devil is in the details. Sorry to hear about your situation. I think today Facebook is the place where the most activity for Allison fans exists. It’s been so long the other form I used to participate in escapes me as to the name but I would try to hook up with some of those guys before I went, changing something as significant as a transformer it could be a lot more to it than that, if you’re that hot for another one, you might be better off continuing on with eBay and be sure you got the American version first.
  4. Today’s newer foam surrounds will hold up virtually as long as rubber. RA did nothing without a reason and rubber surrounds will work but degrade the performance. Had my woofers refoamed over 10 years ago and they are as compliant (so far) as the day they were done.
  5. I once had a bit of shipping trouble with eBay between US and Canada but a happy ending at least. Selling from the United States and I was very specific about US only a fella from Canada ended up buying the amplifier I was selling. Turned out he had a post office arrangement in the United Statesand the transaction turned out to be successful. For a while we were an “AR FAMILY” LOL. 2 AR, integrated amplifiers. (my brother and I.) a pair of 2A from 1963. 4x and my 2ax. I eventually migrated to Allison’s, but the whole thing was a lot of fun.
  6. Your thread has taken me on a trip down memory lane regarding the AR five. Your thread has taken me on a trip down memory lane regarding the AR five. The first pair of AR that I owned were BRAND NEW 2ax’s. They were gifts from my very supportive parents and all of us were musicians… Dad on trombone, mom on piano, and my self on drums. those were beautiful and incredibly thoughtful gifts given to me, but later on given the choice and I was out shopping lol I would’ve gone for the AR5 But after so many years, I can’t recall why. if I were you, I would maintain an ongoing eBay search for a second pair of fives so you would have yourself some spare parts. I did such a thing for my own needs and after 10 years of collecting acquired enough to last lifetime… More than worth it if you’re hooked on the sound.
  7. https://www.ebay.com/itm/115882899324 what a surprise a five dollar remote selling for $200 and it hasn’t gone yet imagine that
  8. Hope you’re well, Tom! Just looking back at some of these old posts….. It was interesting, (but not surprising) to find what little is left of Allison information these days, appears to be primarily on Facebook. Not a Facebook member, But just viewing on the Internet without logging in to that site Yeilds more pictures than any place else.
  9. Oops. Oops Sorry it appears I was late to the party for not scrolling all the way down. Looks like you’ve got the situation well in hand.
  10. https://www.simplyspeakers.com excellent and reasonable…… Bill Legall at Millersound did a lot of work for me, but I use these guys once also on recommendation and they did a great job… Worth a try if you run dry with your other options
  11. Nothing unusual for Allison acoustics…… and really True for any high-quality time, honored loudspeaker system, where the latest in electronics amplifiers playback systems and preamps fall out of favor, the speakers just keep getting better if well cared for. here in 2023 I’m enjoying the latest benefits that are coming from my Panasonic 820 ultra HD Blu-ray player couple with loud speakers from 1987 lol a match made in heaven!
  12. Hi Jeff, Yeah those Allison’s are looking sweet! …..And even without looking I know how the woofers are if Bill Legall had his hands on them. He did a ton of work for me over the past 10 years.
  13. Yep…… Not a stranger to little surprises lurking inside a sealed enclosure. I had one with a rattle And when I opened it up to investigate, I found the entire crossover network, (normally glued to the rear of the cabinet,) had entirely come away. The rattle was not heard during operation, but only when the thing was moved around, as the crossover had fallen into the fiberglass…..so just sat there while it was running, and that was good. Another speaker had a spare grommet laying inside the bottom of the cabinet.(The ones used to secure a grill frame to the exterior. ) I also discovered a small piece of particleboard, had broken off during the original assembly process so the assembler Resorted to a hollow wall anchor to fill the void rather than replacing the wood. It works perfectly, but too much of a task to restore, except by a pro.
  14. $10,000.00 + $450.00 shipping……. I had no interest at all in that eBay pair of A1’s…… Until I read further and found out that the shipping was only 450 bucks. Damn, if I didn’t nearly go for it. All kidding aside (well perhaps not) this is still a free country and you can ask whatever you like! These days you can buy an awful lot of sound for 10,000 bucks
  15. When my time came to part with the Allison:One it started out beautifully and they sold quick rather than going to trash. The buyer, on the other hand turned out to be trash……an idiot who neither fully read my advertisement on EBay or studied the dozen clearly posted photos. I got my price but a war followed that had me appealing to EBay to block the seller from attacking me through the eBay message system. I won out but it was no picnic.
  16. Indeed, and it is sad to see Allison acoustics go away with barely a trace now. Original company is gone for decades. All of the hype developed over the years with respect to the IC 20 came about with one production run of 100 cabinets ordered by Roy Allison back in the day. Never did it go beyond that. The only thing that was more rare…..a handful of prototypes like the IC 10 and a few overseas production units of other designs that were never available in the USA. I found one of those available in the Ukraine that was listed on eBay under my worldwide search. I thought the guy was pulling my leg until I took a good look at it and it did appear to be legit components like the AL 115 in a different configuration.
  17. Here’s the timeline that may explain why you missed the listings(a very long time ago now indeed) I picked mine up, not far from where they were built around this time in 2012. The prior listings were in and around at four year time period before that. that last pair, the debauchery from Huntington came after my purchase. Too painful to look at for very long.
  18. Three pair of 20s came up on eBay during the time When I became a serious buyer and the third pair were the ones I happily ended up with. Later on there was a fourth from Huntington Long Island. Just watched for curiosity, but they were very painful to look at indeed, with a creative owner in hand who decided he would notch out the woofer accommodations to hold 12 inch rather than 10 inch drivers. What a disaster. For such a rare speaker to fall into the hands of Frankenstein. They were literally gutted out in the most frightening manner…… To each his own
  19. Well, certainly, I hope you make out with one or both of those at some point!
  20. ….. it has not sold of course. It’s been pretty sad over the last decade or so, watching what’s left of used Allison whatever diminishing to slim Pickens. Things that used to sell within a few weeks or so, now sitting on places like eBay for years. of course, that has everything to do with the seller being either serious or a dreamer.
  21. …… An interesting item indeed to pop up on eBay……… Useless to anyone, except someone who is in possession of a pair of Allisons with image control modules installed… Which is just about nobody these days lol
  22. Last I heard his pair of modified 20s were dismantled and parted out
  23. Oh, I didn’t realize you were on the West Coast that makes local pick up a tough one. I’m a New Yorker and even here the pickings are very scarce these days that being said, if I weren’t here, the pair I have now would certainly not be in my possession.
