  1. Just so sad. I love Peter Snell designed speakers.
  2. I've driven original Type C's with a 35 wpc push pull valve amp and with a 100 wpc BK amp. Sound awesome with either!
  3. I like to bi-wire all my Snells. And that is running a set of wires to the tweeter and a second set to the woofer - get rid of those jumpers! I always bi-wired my Type EIII's. I like banana plug termination as they are easy to use. Don't worry too much about the cable itself.
  4. I bought these in 1987(?) at Innovative Audio in Brooklyn. I didn't understand what a loudspeaker was supposed to sound like until then. My roommate at the time hated them. Then after a few months loved them. I abused them with a BK 200 watt per channel amp for years. They never disappointed me. I set them aside in 1994 with the new purchase of Type EIII's from Sound By Singer in Manhattan. The K's saw duty here and there. And then they saw great duty in a second system while I was living in England. I can tell that I got a woofer repair kit while there maybe in 2005 or 2006, it is a bit fuzzy, but the woofers and chokes are labeled "kit 1" and "kit 2." Then, back in the USA, I reformed the woofers. Usual rot and these needed to be repaired because they were going to college with my son. Well he graduated and the woofer surrounds were trash again. I looked up the woofer replacement cost at Atomic and it was $400 for the pair! That is with the hand matched inductors. My son told me that the $390.00 I paid in 1987 is $1,700 in 2022 dollars, I told myself I had to buy the new woofers! Well, I repainted the speakers and put new fabric on the covers. And have the new woofers in. (And cleaned out the old tweeter ferrofluid with new.) Need to get them in my system to check them out. Then off with my son back to their home!

    K2 woofer

Glued!!!!????? OMG!!!!!! Those look like the Vifa's in my K's
  6. I'd like to say changing the caps was like "removing a veil" and "moved me even closer to the music." But they sounded great before and after.
  7. Congratulations on your excellent speakers. (I have EIII and C's.) I re-foamed woofers and replaced all tweeter's ferrofluid in both. I replaced the EIII caps with polypropylenes. Didn't touch the C's crossovers. I think the ferrofluid made a positive difference. The C's are just outstanding speakers. (My daughter has the EIII's, gave the C's to my sister, and my son has the first Snells I bought, K's)
  8. I've experience listening to Type K, JII, EIII, C, and 1's. They are noticeable improvements based on my listening. The Type 1's are a special animal and hard to compare. I've never heard D's. I've never heard A's. But the C's are bliss. I'd expect the D's to be an improvement if they are in good shape. Dan
  9. I had some JII's apart years ago but didn't document the crossover. Does your tweeter look like an original? They have been known to lose their coating and sound dull and lifeless. Dan
  10. So I threw caution to the wind and ordered up two Morel 1.125" tweeters. (I know, I know - they came with 1".) But the Morel's looked to be a good fit (physically too). I had to use a wood rasp to open up the holes, but it was just a bit once the paint was gone. Just listening now, but yes they sound pretty awesome. Oh, why that one side's wires were so short, I have no idea. But it made it a pain. Look at the state of the old tweeter! Dan
  11. The coating on the fabric dome tweeters is cracked and gone. Need replacements. (I'm not really interested in "re-coating" the domes.) Any replacement tweeter recommendations? Thanks much, Dan

    Snell Type C

The C's are awesome speakers. Cave or no cave.

    Snell Type C

I just pulled these out of some C’s I bought. The magnet snaps into the diaphragm assembly. I did this for ferrofluid maintenance. These are Vifa, right? Not a hight dollar tweeter. Same as K’s, and the rear on EIII’s? Maybe still in production? These speakers are so good, I’d consider the Snell distributor’s replacement pair (Atomic?)
  14. I like plastic caps, polypropylene. Not a huge fan of paper in oil caps. I expect these crossovers are simple 2nd order. I used Sonic caps but my link no longer works. Good luck
  15. My motive has always been to give these to my sister. She's been running Snell J's for years. But her house needs a bigger speaker. After reforming and new ferrofluid, these speakers just sound amazing. She is running a Conrad Johnson tube phone stage / preamp and BK amp.
  16. Bought them on eBay. Damn these are big. Needed woofer refoams. . One done and MY GOD IT SOUNDS GOOD! Second one in progress. Have ferrofluid for tweeters. Don’t think I’ll re-cap for now. Yes the others are SNELL TYPE 1’s!
